About this campaign
In a city in Egypt, a dog named Atlas endured unimaginable cruelty—his back legs were cut off.
When rescuers found him, he was in shock, his body broken and trembling from pain. But even through the fear and agony, Atlas’s eyes still searched for kindness. Thanks to a brave local advocate and the incredible team at Stray Dog Support (SDS), Atlas was rushed to the hospital in Cairo where he’s now fighting to live.
For weeks, Atlas has remained hospitalized, receiving round-the-clock care. His wounds were so severe that saving his legs seemed impossible—but the veterinary team refused to give up on him. On October 24, Atlas underwent surgery to remove a dead bone fragment, clean the infected tissue, and close his wounds. He was also neutered, and while one of his testicles had atrophied from trauma, the surgeons were able to carefully remove it.
The good news: portions of both hind legs were saved. This means prosthetics may be possible in the future. For now, a wheelchair will help him regain mobility as he continues to heal.
Just a week later, on October 31, Atlas started showing glimpses of hope again—tiny tail wags, soft eye contact, a willingness to trust the humans who’ve refused to give up on him. He’s still in the hospital, recovering from amputation surgery to remove the damaged remains of his legs. His care is intense and ongoing, with constant cleaning, bandage changes, and infection prevention needed every single day.
Atlas’s body has been through hell, but his spirit refuses to break. He wants to walk again. He wants to live.
Now, Stray Dog Support faces the enormous cost of his surgeries, hospitalization, and long-term care. Every donation—no matter the size—helps keep Atlas safe, stable, and on the path toward a future where he will never be hurt again.
Thank you to everyone who’s stood by Atlas through this heartbreaking journey. And a special thank you to the compassionate veterinary team at El Gezira Pets Clinic in Cairo and Dadeg Kamel, whose unwavering care has given this brave soul a fighting chance.
Please, if you can, help Atlas continue his recovery. He deserves the chance to know love, safety, and life without pain.
Update 12/3/25 Atlas is finally coming out of his shell now that he knows he is being helped. His recovery will take time, with constant cleaning and regular bandage changes to prevent infection. The next goal is to get Atlas a wheelchair and eventually prosthetic legs, but options are very limited in Egypt. Despite everything, Atlas is a true fighter. He wants to walk again and never gives up—his strength and determination are truly inspiring.
SDS needs your continued support to help pay for his continued care. Thank you to everyone who has supported Atlas so far, and a special thanks to the amazing vet team for their tireless dedication and compassion.
