Cake was adopted from a farm as a kitten a year after we adopted his sister Marcie from a previous litter. They share their mother’s polydactyl gene, meaning they both have extra toes for their little mitten-shaped paws. They have lived happily together their entire lives, and my empty-nester mother now takes care of them as I have moved to a different city.

My sister and I flew home after we got an emergency call from my mother when Cake suddenly had trouble breathing. The vet revealed liquid in his lung and found a mysterious lump. After weeks of procedures and testing, we were heartbroken to learn he has lung cancer. He now needs surgery at Boundary Bay Veterinary Hospital to place a pleuroport in his lung and to remove the mass.

Cake is a gentle, playful, and beloved boy who has won over even the most skeptical —including our once cat-averse mom who now dotes on her cat children. He learned to sit on command, and always manages to escape the house to roll around in the grass.
