About this campaign

In 2023, I moved to North Carolina after divorcing my abuser. Although our marriage lasted only one year, it exposed me to the same horrors that my clients face daily. My abuser once dragged me with his SUV down our neighborhood street, which dislocated my shoulder. My pet, Chauncey, was the first victim in our household, often abused in front of me when my abuser was angry with me.

On April 19th, Chauncey accidentally ate a partial piece of a corn cob. At the time, I had no money to cover vet expenses, so I carefully monitored him, hoping the corn cob would pass through his system. Unfortunately, another piece remained in his stomach until May 29th, causing him to vomit everything he ingested.

Chauncey is more than just a pet; he is my family and source of emotional support. He has been with me through the most challenging times, offering unconditional love and companionship. During my abusive marriage, Chauncey was a constant source of comfort, helping me endure the trauma and giving me a reason to keep going. I look to him as a comrade in the abuse that we both endured.

Currently, I serve as the Crisis Response Coordinator at Family Services Inc., earning $42,000 a year. While I am passionate about my work, the financial strain has been challenging to make monthly ends meet.
