Darla is a six-year-old Beagle in Jacksonville, NC, who needs $1,000 for life-saving surgery.

When Adoption First Animal Rescue first saw Darla, she broke their hearts. The kind senior Beagle was clearly neglected for years. Then, pregnant, Darla ended up on death row in a shelter. The rescue saved her from being euthanized by the pound, only to save her life again! Darla needed an emergency c-section, a mastectomy to remove mammary tumors, and another surgery to remove a tumor in her ear.

The rescue just had to get Darla out of that shelter, but now they need to raise money to pay for her care. The medical staff at Five Oaks Animal Hospital has been working with the nonprofit, which relies on donations for major medical cases. The group hopes animal lovers who see Darla's story can spare a few dollars to help.

The triumph of the animal spirit really shows in Darla. Even though she was let down by humans who never cared or spayed her, she's a wonderful dog and a good mother.

"Darla is special because she has so much love to give," the rescue's Staci V. tells Waggle. "She loves every person, every animal, and cherishes her life. She has been such a blessing for her foster family, and she shows them so much love daily. We have no idea what she went through before coming to us, but whatever it was, she certainly did not deserve to be in an animal shelter in severe medical shape."
