About this campaign
Esmeralda’s body gave out long before anyone came for her.
When rescuers at Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge first saw her, it stopped them in their tracks. Esmeralda was trembling, barely able to stand, her frail body caving in on itself. Her ribs and spine jutted through her skin. Her face and paws were painfully swollen. Her eyes looked exhausted— she was running out of reasons to keep going.
At barely 20 pounds, Esmeralda wasn’t just thin—she was starving. Her body had begun consuming itself just to survive. This level of emaciation doesn’t happen overnight; it comes from prolonged, relentless neglect.
And still… this girl held on. 💔
With emergency support from their partners at Pitties & Pals Rescue, Esmeralda was rushed to the hospital, where she required an emergency blood transfusion to stabilize. Bloodwork revealed critically low protein levels and severe anemia. For days, she fought quietly in intensive care, receiving IV fluids and a carefully managed re-feeding plan—because feeding her too quickly could have been fatal.
Slowly but surely, Esmeralda regained enough strength to leave the hospital. But the road ahead is long: X-rays revealed hip dysplasia and arthritis—adding even more pain to a body that’s already endured far too much. She remains weak and unsteady, still dangerously underweight for a dog who should be 35–40 pounds, and she's looking at routine monitoring, medications, a very specialized nutrition plan, and ongoing veterinary care.
But Esmeralda’s emergency hospitalization, diagnostics, medications, and follow-up care have already climbed into the thousands—and they're still climbing.
Please consider donating today to support Esmeralda’s ongoing medical care. Every ounce of support matters in this gentle girl’s recovery. ❤️🩹
