About this campaign
This sweet girl’s name is Hazel, a 3-year-old pitbull who has already endured more than any dog ever should. She lived her entire life on a chain — facing loneliness, harsh weather, and never knowing if she would even be fed that day.
Finding herself saved by One by One Animal Advocates her life is now taking a turn for the better, but we want so much more for Hazel. She deserves warmth, safety, medical care, and a family who will treasure her.
Today she underwent surgery, and we received an urgent update from the vet: Hazel had an abnormal amount of bleeding during her spay. While in surgery, they ran additional testing and discovered she is positive for E. canis and Lyme — two tick-borne illnesses. The excessive bleeding is a symptom of E. canis, and combined with her fragile uterus (likely from previous pregnancies), it caused serious concern. She had to be transported to the ER for hospitalization so she could be monitored for possible internal bleeding. After spending the night at the ER, she is now back at Ashland Animal Clinic where she continues to be closely observed.
This was unexpected, and the emergency care is costly — but necessary to save her life. Donations made today will go directly toward her ER visit, hospitalization, continued monitoring, treatment for tick-borne illnesses, vaccines, preventatives, and everything she needs to finally have a real chance at a healthy future. Hazel has already proven she is a fighter. Now she needs us. Please consider donating and sharing so we can meet our goal and show Hazel she is no longer alone.
4/16/26 Update
After her frightening post-surgery complications, Hazel remained hospitalized for close monitoring and repeat bloodwork. The biggest concern was the abnormal bleeding caused by her E. canis diagnosis, but thanks to attentive veterinary care and her own incredible resilience, the bleeding has resolved and her bloodwork has improved.
Because of that progress, Hazel has officially been cleared to leave the hospital and return to her foster home—something we were all anxiously waiting for. Even during her recovery, Hazel has shown us exactly who she is: a loving, gentle soul who just wants to be close to people. While staying at the clinic, she quickly became everyone’s favorite “helper.” She greeted clients, soaked up attention, and brought smiles to the staff who have worked so hard to care for her.
In true Hazel fashion, she’s also become a bit of a fashion icon—the team loves dressing her up when she comes back for check-ups, and she soaks up every second of it. After everything she’s been through—living chained outside, battling illness, and facing scary medical complications—Hazel continues to choose love. She is truly something special.
She still has a road ahead as she continues treatment for her tick-borne illnesses and regains her strength, but this is a huge step in the right direction. We are so grateful for everyone who has supported Hazel so far. Your donations made it possible for her to receive the emergency care she needed to survive.
If you’re able to continue sharing or contributing, it truly makes a difference as we support Hazel through the rest of her recovery and give her the life she has always deserved.
4/27/26 Update
Hazel’s journey has been nothing short of incredible, and today we are so happy to share the news we have all been waiting for:
Hazel has made a full recovery. After the terrifying complications following her spay surgery, the emergency hospitalization, the abnormal bleeding, and the unexpected diagnoses of both E. canis and Lyme disease, there were many moments where we simply had to take things one day at a time. Her little body had been through so much after years of neglect, living chained outside without proper care or protection. But Hazel never stopped fighting.
With continued veterinary monitoring, medication, follow-up visits, and lots of love from her foster family, Hazel steadily regained her strength. She successfully completed her full treatment plan for both tick-borne illnesses, and we are thrilled to report that she has recovered beautifully.
Hazel continues to charm everyone she meets with her affectionate personality, her sweet “helper” attitude, and of course her love of dressing up for attention. Watching her transform from a forgotten chained dog into a joyful, thriving companion has been one of the most rewarding things we could witness.
Because of your donations, Hazel received every emergency intervention, medication, test, and follow-up treatment she needed to survive and heal. Your support truly changed the course of her life. While Hazel’s medical battle is behind her now, rescues like One by One Animal Advocates are still saying yes to dogs just like her every day — dogs who arrive sick, neglected, and in urgent need of care. Please consider making a donation today to help the next animal facing a medical emergency get the same chance Hazel did.
5/20/26 Update
What a journey Hazel has had — and we could not be happier to share this beautiful final update.
When Hazel first came into rescue, she was severely emaciated, exhausted, and had spent her entire life chained outside. She had known neglect, repeated pregnancies, hunger, and loneliness instead of the love and safety every dog deserves. Soon after finally being rescued, she faced even more challenges when complications during her spay surgery revealed underlying tick-borne illnesses that nearly cost her life. But Hazel never stopped fighting.
Thanks to the incredible care from her veterinary team, the dedication of her rescue, and the compassion of supporters like you, Hazel received the emergency hospitalization, treatment, medications, monitoring, and follow-up care she desperately needed. Step by step, she regained her strength, healed from her illnesses, and finally got the chance to simply be a dog.
And now for the happiest news of all: Hazel has officially been ADOPTED!
Today, Hazel spends her days exploring trails, hiking with her family, cuddling with her fur siblings, and enjoying long peaceful naps in a home where she is cherished. The dog who once lived at the end of a chain now has a future filled with adventure, comfort, safety, and love.
Her transformation is truly incredible, and it would not have been possible without every person who donated, shared her story, and believed she deserved a second chance. Because of your support, Hazel’s story did not end in suffering — it ended in healing, happiness, and a family of her very own.
Thank you for helping change Hazel’s life forever.
