About this campaign
One frightening accident left Amy with a broken pelvis, a fractured vertebra, and the inability to walk.
Just one day earlier, Amy had been enjoying a wonderful weekend in New York City at Broadway Barks with her Husky House family. Then, after getting loose from her foster home, Amy was struck by a car.
Her foster family immediately rushed her to a local emergency hospital, where she was stabilized before being transferred to the specialists at Garden State for continued care.
The accident left Amy with multiple serious injuries, including a broken pelvis, a fractured vertebra, and a pneumothorax, which occurs when air collects around the lungs and can interfere with normal breathing. Most concerning of all, Amy was unable to walk and had lost control of her bladder and bowels.
A neurologist evaluated Amy and found some reason for hope. Her inability to walk appeared to be related to her orthopedic injuries rather than neurological damage. However, her incontinence was believed to be connected to the trauma surrounding her fractured vertebra.
Amy's veterinary team hoped the loss of bladder and bowel control could be temporary and related to the tremendous inflammation and swelling caused by the accident, but there was no way to know yet how much function she would regain as her body began to heal.
The next step was a CT scan to get a much clearer picture of the damage to Amy's pelvis and determine whether surgery could be performed. While Amy was stable and breathing without oxygen support, she still faced a serious and uncertain recovery from multiple traumatic injuries.
Amy went from enjoying a day out with the people who love her to being hospitalized and unable to walk in a matter of hours. Now she needs time, specialty veterinary care, and continued monitoring to determine what recovery will look like for her.
Donations to Amy's fundraiser will help with the cost of her emergency stabilization, hospitalization, advanced imaging, specialist care, treatment for her fractures, and any additional procedures she may need. There are still important unknowns surrounding Amy's mobility and incontinence, and Husky House is committed to giving her every opportunity to recover from this devastating accident.
