Annie Stayed Until the End. Now It’s Our Turn to Stay With Her

When Animal Control was called to a rural Kentucky home, they found Annie alone with her owner, who had passed away.

We may never know how long this senior girl had been alone, how long she had gone without enough food, or how long her body had been struggling. But one thing is certain: Annie stayed. She remained by the person she loved until there was no one left to care for her.

Now, One By One Animal Rescue is staying with Annie.

When she arrived at the Carter County Animal Shelter, Annie was severely emaciated and in heartbreaking condition. Most of her fur was gone, her skin was thick, raw, inflamed and painful, and she was covered in fleas and ticks. Her nails were severely overgrown, and her fragile body showed just how long she had gone without proper care.

When we saw Annie's condition, we rushed her to the emergency hospital, where veterinarians discovered that she is anemic and Lyme positive. She is receiving IV fluids, supplements, antibiotics for her painful skin and Lyme disease, and constant monitoring to determine whether she will need a blood transfusion.

Because Annie has been so severely malnourished, even feeding her requires extreme caution. Her veterinarians have carefully calculated her nutritional needs, and she is being given tiny amounts of food every two hours to prevent potentially fatal refeeding syndrome. Her little body must be nourished slowly and carefully as she begins rebuilding the strength she has lost.

Her skin has also been incredibly painful. Annie was so inflamed and uncomfortable that she was biting at herself and crying out. Her vet team approved a Cytopoint injection to help give her some much-needed relief.

For now, Annie will remain hospitalized under close observation. Her veterinary team is continuing fluids, medications, nutritional support and frequent bloodwork while watching her anemia and overall condition.

We don't know what the coming days will bring. We don't know how long Annie's recovery will take or what additional treatment she may need. But we do know this: Annie has been alone long enough. She will not be alone anymore.

After giving her loyalty to her person until the very end, Annie now has people fighting for her. She deserves the chance to know what it feels like to be comfortable, nourished, cared for and loved.
