After a Lifetime of Neglect, Benny Finally Has a Home—Help Keep Him Comfortable

When 4-pound, 12-year-old Benny arrived at our county shelter in March, it was immediately clear that this tiny senior had endured a lifetime without the care he deserved.

Benny had never been neutered, had no teeth, and his lower jaw had deteriorated so severely that it was almost impossible to comprehend how he had survived for so long. But the biggest shock came when his bloodwork revealed kidney disease. Benny wasn't an adoption candidate. He was a hospice dog.

Benny was pulled from the county shelter and transferred to Wild Whiskers, where we promised him that, whatever time he had left, he would finally have a safe home and someone fighting for him. And then we discovered something wonderful: Benny doesn't act like a hospice dog.

This tiny little guy is still full of personality. He greets everyone who walks through the door with his wagging nub, jumps up for attention, loves people, and happily welcomes foster dogs and cats—including special-needs kittens. Despite everything he has endured, Benny has an enormous capacity for love.

Of course, hospice care isn't always easy. Benny has days when he becomes extremely lethargic, won't eat, or doesn't want to get out of bed. Those moments are frightening, and his family carefully watches his quality of life to make sure he remains comfortable.

But so far, Benny keeps getting back up. He's still eating. He's still enjoying attention. He's still loving his foster siblings. And he's still showing us that he's not ready to give up.

As long as Benny is comfortable and enjoying his life, Wild Whiskers will continue giving him every good day possible. He receives subcutaneous fluids several times a week, supplements twice daily, regular veterinary care, and repeat bloodwork to monitor his kidney disease and make sure his treatment continues to support his quality of life.

We can't change the first 12 years of Benny's story. We can't undo the neglect that left his tiny body so damaged. But we can change what comes next.

Benny will never spend another night on the streets. He will never go without veterinary care again. And he will never wonder whether someone loves him.
