A week ago, Dorje was starving on the streets. Tonight, she will finally go to sleep with a full stomach.
When Soltis Hope Street Dog Rescue found Dorje, starvation had taken an unimaginable toll. She was skeletal, struggling to walk and covered from head to toe in mange, wounds and secondary infections. Her body had begun consuming its own muscle just to survive.
Dorje was terrified. She had learned to fear people so deeply that rescuers spent more than an hour trying to gain her trust before finally bringing her to safety. At the clinic, she was too medically fragile to safely sedate and too frightened to let anyone near her.
But just over a week later, something is changing.
Dorje is walking better. Her skin is beginning to heal. Her body condition is improving. And slowly, she is realizing she doesn’t have to run anymore.
Several times a day, food appears. No one asks anything from her. She can simply eat, rest and heal.
Dorje still has a long road ahead. She needs continued wound care, treatment for mange and infections, careful nutrition, supplements, vaccinations, parasite treatment, deworming and, once she is strong enough, a spay.

A second update on Dorje, because so many of you have been asking how she’s doing—and honestly, we’re so proud of her. We think this girl deserves another update so you can see just how far she’s come.
Just over three weeks ago, Dorje was skeletal. Starvation had caused such severe muscle wasting that even walking was difficult. She was completely hairless from mange and secondary infections and terrified of people. Today, she has gained 5 kg (11 lbs), her muscles are strengthening, and she walks completely normally. Because she was so severely emaciated, her weight must be restored slowly and carefully, so she still has more to gain.
And who knew underneath all that damaged skin was this beautiful sandy-colored girl? Her fur is growing back more every day, and we can’t wait to see her with a full, healthy coat.
But the change we’re most proud of may be the one you can’t see. Dorje arrived so frightened and defensive that she tried to bite anyone who came near her. Now she no longer runs from us. She’s still a little skittish, but she’s beginning to accept affection, relax around her caregivers and enjoy life at the sanctuary. She’s not a huge fan of the other dogs, but she isn’t aggressive with them either. Dorje seems quite content doing things on her own terms, and after everything she has survived, we’re quite happy to let her.
Five kilograms heavier. Walking normally. Beautiful sandy fur growing back. And finally learning that she is safe.
