About this campaign

Duke came to us in poor condition. He was malnourished, dehydrated, and had been kept on a chain on a concrete slab. My son brought Duke home so he could have a better life. His coat was grey and he didn't know how to play with a toy. Today, four months later, his coat is dark black, he eats well with quality food, and he is much more outgoing and finally shows some signs of being happy.

When I took Duke to the vet for a checkup, a blood test showed he had heartworms. I decided to begin treatment because I didn't want the poor dog to suffer. As the vet's staff started telling me about the treatment, I realized it was going to be very expensive. Heartworm can be treated, but it isn't cheap. I decided to continue, and think about the costs later.

Duke is a beautiful dog. He looked as though he was next to death when we took him in, thin and malnourished. I grew up with dogs and love them. We already had a lab/mastiff mix, very healthy and well-cared for, who is a delight. Duke has become his companion. No dog should suffer mistreatment and we simply could not turn Duke away. Man's best friend deserves better.

I am retired from working in a small public school, and on fixed income. I still support three almost-adult kids and funds are stretched thin. I wanted to help Duke and did not consider the cost at the time, but now I realize that I am in for a large fee.
