About this campaign
I adopted Maria in April 2026 from the Santa Fe Animal Shelter. We went to the shelter and she hooked her paws on my arm and didn't let go. She had been terribly abused and was nervous, but quickly became trusting of our family. She remains scared of some things, but in most ways is thriving. She is quite, sweet and loves deep eye contact, kisses, rolling in grass, and her little swimming pool.
Maria has severe pulmonary stenosis. Fifty percent of dogs with this diagnosis will die within the first year of diagnosis. I thought she was just a very calm, chill dog, but it's actually that she can't get too excited or hot or she could literally pass out or die. She is able to zoomy around briefly and then has to stand still and catch her breath. The pool helps her cool down.
I love Maria with all my heart. She has been through a lot in her short life. She is very sweet, kind, and caring. She deserves a chance at a full life, where she can play as much as she wants. I am a therapist and she comes to work with me. She bonds most with others who have trauma or are very gentle and quiet. She is loved by everyone who has met her. I don't know what I'd do without her.
About a year ago I lost 95% of my belongings in a house fire. I was very underinsured and didn't realize it. It was a very stressful time, and a huge loss. I am doing fine now but still getting back on my financial feet. Any hep you can provide will be greatly appreciated!
