When Owl was found abandoned on a Brooklyn sidewalk, she was barely clinging to life. Her body told a heartbreaking story of cruelty no animal should ever have to endure.
But Owl's story didn't end there.
Thanks to NYC Second Chance Rescue, their dedicated medical partners, loving foster caregivers, and the incredible community that rallied behind her, Owl got the second chance she so desperately deserved.
With intensive medical care, patience, and an outpouring of love, Owl slowly began to heal. She regained her strength, rediscovered the simple joys of being a dog, and learned what it meant to feel safe.
And then came the happiest news of all: Owl was adopted by her foster family! ❤️
The family who helped her heal fell completely in love with her and knew they couldn't let her go. Now, Owl has a beautiful home, a loving family who appreciates her, siblings to share her adventures with, and even a pool to lounge beside. The dog who was once abandoned and left to suffer is finally living the life she always deserved.

What happened to Owl was not simple neglect. It was prolonged, heartbreaking cruelty.
Someone appears to have watched this beautiful dog slowly starve until she became so weak that she could no longer stand. Her nails grew horrifically long and curled beneath her paws. Sores developed across her skeletal body. Her tail became necrotic. And when she was finally abandoned, she was simply dumped on a Brooklyn sidewalk and left there.
Owl was found near Owl’s Head Park unable to walk and barely strong enough to survive. Estimated to be just 5–7 years old, Owl may have spent years—possibly half of her life—with the person who allowed this to happen to her. Her condition tells the devastating story of prolonged starvation and suffering.
When she arrived at NYC Second Chance Rescue, Owl was severely emaciated, extremely weak, and unable to stand. Her body was covered in pressure sores over the areas where bone protruded beneath her skin. Her nails were so severely overgrown and curled that they showed just how long she had been neglected. Her tail tip has become necrotic and ulcerated, and she may require surgery or even amputation.
Bloodwork revealed significantly elevated liver enzymes, showing just how severely her body has been affected by prolonged starvation. Owl also has a heart murmur and severe dental disease, adding even more challenges to an already critical situation.
Right now, Owl requires around-the-clock medical care and extremely close monitoring for refeeding syndrome. After prolonged starvation, simply giving a dog food again can be dangerous if it is not done carefully. Her veterinary team must slowly and cautiously nourish her while watching for potentially life-threatening complications.
There are no guarantees that Owl will make it. If she does survive this critical period, she is facing weeks of hospitalization, intensive treatment, rehabilitation, and a long road toward rebuilding her strength.
But for the first time in what may have been years, Owl has people fighting for her. And the rescue is also fighting for justice.
They are seeking surveillance footage from cameras near Owl’s Head Park and the area where she was abandoned, hoping to identify the person responsible for what was done to her and hold them accountable.
Owl never deserved this. She deserved food. She deserved medical care. She deserved a safe place to sleep. She deserved someone to protect her. Instead, she was allowed to waste away until she could barely stand—and then she was discarded. We refuse to let that be the end of her story.
Her road to recovery will be long, expensive, and uncertain, but the rescue is determined to do everything possible to get Owl out of the woods and give her the life she should have had all along.

From fighting to survive to lounging by the pool....OWL had been adopted!
When Owl came into our care, she had been abandoned on a Brooklyn street severely emaciated. She weighed just 20 pounds. Her fragile body told the heartbreaking story of everything she had endured, and she had a long road to recovery ahead of her.
Thanks to the incredible dedication of our medical partners, Owl slowly began to heal. Then came our amazing volunteers and foster families, who helped her regain her strength, rebuild her confidence and discover what it meant to be loved.
Somewhere along the way, one foster family realized they simply couldn't let her go - so they foster failed!
Today, Owl has a forever family, siblings to share her adventures with, a pool to splash around in and a beautiful life filled with everything she was once denied.

We have the most wonderful news to share about Owl! After everything this sweet girl has endured, she has officially found her forever home. Even better? Her foster family fell in love with her and has decided to adopt her! ❤️
The dog who was once left helpless and alone on a sidewalk now has a family who loves her, a safe place to rest, toys to play with, and people who will make sure she never has to face that kind of suffering again. After everything she endured, Owl finally gets to experience the comfort, security, and affection she always deserved.
But while Owl's story has a happy ending, the veterinary bills from her emergency hospitalization, diagnostics, treatment, specialized nutritional care, and ongoing medical needs remain. We have a wonderful update on Owl! She was finally well enough to leave the hospital and head to her foster home. Getting her there was another reminder that rescue truly takes a community.
Our transport volunteer arrived to pick up Owl, along with the special food she needs as her body continues to recover, and drove her to the foster home waiting for her.
Then we got to watch her simply be... a dog. Eating her meals. Exploring her new surroundings. Going for walks. Playing with toys. Feeling safe, cared for and loved by one of our dedicated fosters.
Every piece of Owl’s journey has taken someone. The person who stopped for her. The veterinary team who fought to stabilize her. The volunteers who transported her. The foster who opened their home. And every person who shared her story and rooted for her along the way.
This is what rescue looks like. It takes a community to save one life, and because of ours, Owl is finally getting the second chance she deserves.
