The Scars of Abuse

About this campaign

Remington didn't just come to Texoma Center for Sustainable Welfare with a severe injury, he arrived carrying the visible trauma of severe, prolonged mistreatment.

He originally came to our rescue as an emergency crisis hold. When he arrived, the horrifying stories of the abuse he had endured were immediately evident on his body: Remmi was terribly underweight, covered in scabs across his face and throat, and so profoundly shut down and confined in his past that he had no idea how to even behave outside of a kennel. The simple world of grass, open rooms, and human kindness was completely foreign to him.

As we gently began rehabilitating him and showing him what safety felt like, we noticed he was struggling severely to walk and stand. When he tried to play, he would collapse or stop in agony.

We rushed Remmi to Lange Veterinary Hospital for an evaluation and diagnostic radiographs.

The images revealed the full extent of the physical neglect he survived: his hip is completely dislocated from the socket. Because this injury was left untreated by his past owner for months, severe secondary osteoarthritis and painful bone remodeling have formed, leaving raw bone grinding against bone every time he tries to take a step.

Today, Remmi knows he is safe and loved. He is finally learning how to be a dog outside of a cage, and his sweet Heeler spirit wants so badly to run and play with his foster friends. But right now, he is on strict kennel rest and daily pain management because his body physically cannot handle the movement.

Pain medication is only keeping the agony at bay, it cannot fix a joint that is completely displaced.

How Your Support Helps:

Remington needs orthopedic surgery to remove the damaged bone friction so he can walk and run without pain. While he is safely under anesthesia, our vet team will also neuter him so he only has to endure a single surgical recovery.

Diagnostic & Evaluation Balance: $199 remaining from his initial X-rays and exam.

Orthopedic Surgery & Neuter Estimate: ~$1,200.

Total Medical Goal: $1,399.

After everything Remington has endured, the starvation, the confinement, the scabs, and the untreated dislocated hip, he holds zero malice toward people. He leans in for gentle pets and wags his tail with pure gratitude.

He survived the abuse; now he needs our help to survive the pain. Please donate or share to help Remmi finally leave his past behind on four strong, pain-free legs 🐾
