About this campaign
At only six weeks old and weighing just four pounds, little Rio has already had to fight harder for his life than any puppy should.
Rio was part of a litter of puppies living outside when tragedy struck. His siblings were tragically killed by other dogs, leaving Rio as the only surviving puppy. Even more heartbreaking, people knew he was there, yet this tiny, sick baby was left lying alone in a field for days.
By the time CAMO Rescue learned about Rio and rushed him to the vet, he was barely hanging on.
Tests revealed just how critical his condition had become. Rio was covered in fleas and suffering from hookworms. Those parasites feed on blood and can be especially dangerous for a puppy this young and small. Together, they had caused catastrophic blood loss.
Rio’s red blood cell count had dropped to just 3%. A normal level is approximately 35–55%.
His little body simply didn’t have enough blood left to keep going.
Rio desperately needed an emergency blood transfusion, and without one, his rescuers feared they would lose the last surviving puppy from his litter. His veterinarian then did something incredibly special: she brought in her own dog to donate the blood Rio needed.
That transfusion gave Rio a chance.
He made it through the procedure, responded well, and then gave everyone another reason to hope... Rio made it through the night. ❤️🩹
For a puppy who had been found barely clinging to life, every one of these milestones is huge. But Rio is not out of the woods yet. His tiny body has been through an enormous amount, and he still needs hospitalization, close monitoring, treatment for the parasites that caused his severe anemia, and supportive care as he works to regain his strength.
Rio has already lost his entire litter. He spent days alone when he desperately needed someone to notice him. Now, he finally has an entire team fighting to make sure his story doesn’t end there.
This little survivor has shown that he wants to keep fighting. Please donate if you can and help CAMO Rescue give Rio the care he needs to grow stronger, go home, and finally experience the puppyhood he almost never got the chance to have.
If funds raised exceed Waggle's goal for this featured pet, Waggle will use the surplus to help other animals in catastrophic situations and support our mission to end economic euthanasia.
