Jasper is a one-year-old Shepherd mix in Huntington, WV, who needs $1,800 for bullet removal surgery.

Jasper ended up in an animal shelter after he got picked up running along a busy, four-lane highway.

He sat in the facility for a month, and no one knew a terrible injury was festering on his leg. X-rays revealed he had been shot and could no longer bear weight on the leg. The trauma also damaged his ACL (ligament in his knee.)

Limping in pain, Jasper got put on the euthanasia list at the shelter. That's when One By One Animal Advocates raced to his rescue.

"Jasper was wasting away at the animal shelter," Heather A., with the nonprofit group, tells Waggle. "We couldn't let him die just because he was injured. You can tell by his face that he's pleading to be saved. We could not leave him there."

Now Jasper needs urgent surgery to remove all the bullet fragments and repair his ACL. After the operation is complete, he will then receive heartworm treatment.
