About this campaign
At 6 weeks, Kataude was found in a shoebox—cold, starving, dehydrated, anemic, flea-covered, with a broken jaw and arm. The next day the shelter said I’d accepted care and couldn’t take him. Rescues were full. With 3 other rescues at home and no funds, I still couldn’t leave him. That was 7 months ago. Kataude means “one arm” in Japanese, but I like that it also means “right-hand man.”
As Kataude healed, he became attached to Lola, my 20 year old chihuahua, napping beside her for hours. Once he had more energy, he formed a playful, loving bond with my former feral cat Big Daddy. Though he dislikes being picked up and squirms away, he sneaks into laps or arms unnoticed—suddenly you realize he’s been cuddling for some time.
He steadily recovered from injuries and was gaining weight, but at 5 months, digestive issues began, worsening over time. His appetite faded, and now he struggles to eat. Arcata Animal Hospital suspects FIP, a viral illness. More testing is needed, followed by a 3+ month treatment if confirmed. If FIP is untreated, death will likely occur within months.
When he was found, I was finishing grad school and barely covering basics. I now work full-time, but I have debts to pay off, and other pets that need care too. Kataude has fought hard to live, please help me help him.
