About this campaign
Leo was adopted from Happy Life Animal Rescue on 2/17/2018. He was born on 7/4/2017, and that is why he was given the name Leo. My mother had recently lost her elderly German Shepherd, Ruby, and was looking for a new canine companion. She moved from Brooklyn after escaping an abusive situation and has been enjoying the quieter life upstate with her pets.
Leo suddenly became paralyzed on 9/4/2024. He had been taken out for his usual walk around 3pm but at 7pm, we heard scratching noises from upstairs and found Leo laying down and unable to walk. We immediately took him to Guardian Veterinary Specialists in Brewster, NY. The MRI revealed that Leo suffered a fibrocartilaginous embolism. It may take months for him to recover and walk again.
Leo is a special and very sensitive pup. He has been a remarkable companion for my mother, who is very hard of hearing and lives alone. He has brought a lot of joy into her life. Leo is the reason she gets up and out of the house several times a day and he helps to keep her active and healthy.
My mother is on a fixed income, and with the rising costs of everything, she already has difficulty making ends meet. On top of that, she had knee replacement surgery on 7/8/24 and is still recovering from that, both physically and financially.
