Mao is a 15-year-old Domestic Shorthair in Cleveland, OH, who needs $4,000 for Radiation.

Mao arrived in my life as a stray cat 15 years ago, when I was first diagnosed with endometriosis. He provided tremendous support to me during that painful time and continues to do so today. Mao has been staying with me at my boyfriend's house, so that I can take care of his senior dog, so my boyfriend can fulfill his important work as a firefighter/paramedic.

Mao has a best friend named Datou, who was also a stray. Datou is the survivor of a BB gun shooting that left a pellet lodged in his ear. For years, Datou remained jumpy and anxious because of this previous trauma. Through Mao’s steady companionship, Datou has grown into self-confidence and is now a fully-fledged "bossy cat." They are a highly bonded pair. And, of course, they are like my sons.

I help disadvantaged students attain admissions to college. My income has become more limited due to coronavirus. I have yet to receive my federal benefits as a freelancer. Mao's treatment will cost $7-$9K. I'm paying for more than half and asking for help on the rest.

Mao was recently diagnosed with nasal lymphoma. He is currently receiving radiation at OSU and will likely need future chemotherapy. Nevertheless, Mao has a good prognosis and his tumor has not spread. Mao has otherwise perfect bloodwork, and just after 2 days of radiation, he has bounced back tremendously: his tumor has visibly shrunk and he is eating and running around like before.

Beyond his beauty, many people comment on Mao's open, pleasant, and calm nature. My boyfriend, who considers himself a "dog person," marvels at how unusually dog-like Mao is—he comes when called and wags his tail in happiness. Mao also enjoys stealing Cheetos, Taco Bell, and Krispy Creme Donuts, though he's fed a high-quality semi-raw diet according to the recipe of Dr. Lisa A. Pierson, DVM.
