About this campaign
When she was first found outside, Merlot was believed to be a kitten struggling to survive. She was small, underweight, and waiting desperately on a doorstep for help, as if saying, “Please… I’ve been waiting for someone to notice me.”
But once Merlot arrived at the vet, the truth came crashing in. During what should have been a routine spay, the medical team found fluid and a mass near her mammary glands. Further testing revealed that Merlot is not a kitten at all but actually an adult cat who had been quietly suffering for too long, abandoned outside with no one to help her.
The biopsy brought devastating news: Merlot has Grade 2 mammary cancer. She is also battling kidney disease and a painful urinary tract infection.
Despite everything, Merlot’s rescuers refused to give up on her. Her future is uncertain, but her will to live is a powerful thing! This friendly, gentle girl was left behind when she needed care the most, and now she needs additional surgery, bloodwork, and ongoing medical support to give her the life she always deserved.
Because cases like Merlot don’t come with warning. Because abandoned animals with serious illness don’t get second chances unless someone steps in. Because we never want to look at an animal like Merlot and say, “We can’t afford to continue her care.” That is why your donations matter.
Merlot didn’t deserve to be abandoned to suffer alone. But she deserves every chance we can give her now.
8/11/26 Update
Merlot’s mammary mass was successfully removed, but the biopsy brought difficult news: it was Grade 2 mammary carcinoma, an aggressive cancer that may return or spread.
Thankfully, chest X-rays showed no evidence that the cancer had already spread. After carefully considering the options, we have decided not to put Merlot through a radical mastectomy or chemotherapy. Instead, we are focusing on keeping her comfortable, happy and surrounded by love for however much time she has.
Her testing also revealed early kidney disease, and she was recently treated for a urinary tract infection that may have affected her kidneys. Merlot is now eating a prescription kidney diet and will continue to receive the monitoring and supportive care she needs. For Merlot, care now means good food, peaceful days, regular veterinary follow-up and the chance to simply enjoy being safe and loved. We couldn't have done this without you.
