Help Nana Survive After a Brutal Attack

Meet Nana, a gentle senior dog whose life changed forever in a single horrifying night. Nana has been cared for by a local shelter ever since they moved into their new location. She is an older stray dog who had finally found a place where she could feel safe. But yesterday morning, shelter workers heard heartbreaking cries coming from outside — screams of pain no animal should ever have to endure.

When rescuers rushed to her, they were horrified by what they found. A neighborhood security guard later shared that around 4 a.m., he heard the sound of a dog being violently beaten and screaming in agony. When he went outside to investigate, he saw two people running away carrying a large stick. The shelter reviewed their outdoor security footage, but sadly the attack happened too far from the cameras to clearly identify the people responsible.

Nana was immediately brought inside the shelter and given emergency first aid while rescuers desperately searched for transportation to get her to the veterinary hospital as quickly as possible.

After extensive examinations, blood tests, and X-rays, veterinarians discovered the full extent of the damage inflicted on this sweet elderly dog. Nana is believed to be around 10 years old, and she has already lost all of her teeth from age and hardship. The brutal beating left her with a fractured pelvis, severe wounds across her body, and a large swollen mass on her face. But the injuries did not stop there.

The trauma caused a serious hernia that forced her colon and bladder to protrude through the damaged area. The attack also tore the muscles responsible for helping her urinate and defecate, leaving her unable to relieve herself normally. Veterinarians had to immediately place a catheter to empty her bladder and stabilize her condition.

Now Nana urgently needs major emergency surgery to return her organs to their proper place, repair the hernia, and reconstruct the torn muscles so she can urinate and defecate again.

Because of Nana’s age, the surgery is extremely risky — but without it, she will not survive. Although her pelvic fracture thankfully does not require surgery, Nana will need strict cage rest and long-term confinement to allow her body to heal properly after everything she has endured.

Despite unimaginable pain and cruelty, Nana continues to fight. She deserved compassion and protection, but instead she suffered horrific violence at the hands of people who should have known better. Now this sweet senior girl needs all of us to show her that kindness still exists.

We are so relieved to share that Nana’s emergency surgery was successful. After everything this sweet senior girl endured, Nana made it through her major operation and is now finally beginning the long road to recovery. Veterinarians were able to repair the devastating hernia injuries caused by the attack, return her organs to their proper place, and reconstruct the damaged muscles that had left her unable to urinate or defecate normally.

Because Nana is older, severely malnourished, and came into surgery in such fragile condition, her healing process is expected to be slow — but she is already showing everyone just how strong she truly is. Right now, she is resting comfortably, receiving pain management, supportive care, and strict confinement so her body can continue to heal safely.

While Nana still has a long journey ahead of her, this surgery gave her the chance she desperately needed.

Nana remains hospitalized and under the care of her veterinary team following the horrific injuries she suffered. While she still has a long road ahead, we are encouraged by the progress she is making each day.

Because of the extensive trauma to her body and the major surgery she underwent, Nana is still very weak and currently needs assistance to urinate and defecate. Her caregivers are helping her with these basic functions while closely monitoring her recovery and providing the supportive care she needs.

One thing Nana has not lost is her appetite. Despite everything she has endured, she is eating well and maintaining a healthy interest in food, which is an encouraging sign as her body works to heal. Every meal she finishes helps give her strength for the challenges that still lie ahead.

Recovery for a senior dog with injuries this severe is never quick, but Nana continues to show quiet determination every day. She is resting, healing, and receiving the compassionate care she deserves after experiencing such unimaginable cruelty.

After undergoing lifesaving surgery and receiving weeks of intensive veterinary care, Nana is now safe at Paws & Claws Animal Welfare, where she is finally experiencing the kindness and security she has always deserved. While her recovery is still ongoing, Nana continues to make steady progress each day. She remains under close medical supervision and is receiving vitamin B12 injections, medications, and supportive care to help her regain her strength. Most importantly, Nana is no longer afraid.

She is comfortable, feeling safe, and beginning to trust again.
