About this campaign
On February 8th our sweet boy had an accident ..when turning around to sit, he instead missed and fell off our bed hitting the hard vinyl flooring. We immediately called the emergency vet.. a number on a brochure I was sure we would never need to use... They advised we get him into right away, so that's what we did. After what felt like days of waiting, the doctor came in to see us and said they had given Oakley pain medication, did some x-rays & blood work to verify whether or not he had internal bleeding as well as check organ function. Luckily his labs came back fine however he does have a fracture. They went ahead with our permission and put him under anesthesia to get his splint on. Our poor little guy went back in and stayed the night on February 9th in hopes of a better chance of getting in for surgery Monday or Tuesday. After five long hours of waiting to see how our boy was we finally got to go home at 3:30am. He was in a lot of pain. The Dr prescribed a variety of pain medications and anti-inflammatory drugs. We were hoping and praying our little guy would get in for surgery Monday. It just broke our hearts to see him like that. February 9th also happened to be the same day Oakley turned 12 weeks old and to have gone through so much in his life already. Our little guy did good throughout the night his first night at the animal hospital. He received IV pain medication since he was experiencing so much pain. He was put under anesthesia again in order for the doctor to change his splint again. The board certified surgeon saw Oakley that Monday morning and had scheduled him surgery first thing Tuesday, February 11th in the morning. The surgeon felt it would be a bit of a challenging surgery since there are multiple bone fragments he'll need to remove while in there. Later that day I received a call from the surgeon, Oakley tolerated anesthesia very well. He was able to successfully remove all the bone fragments. A metal plate and screws were placed to hold Oakley’s tibia and fibula in place. Oakley would stay another night for monitoring. The surgeon felt he should be ready to come home the following day. Oakley has strict orders and will really need to be restricted. After 3 days and stealing the hearts of all the wonderful doctors and staff at Animal Referral Center, Oakley finally got to come home February 12th. Upon discharge we were informed that Oakley had started to apply light/minimal pressure of his leg which is good. He’s been spunky, happy pup and is very happy to be home. However, he got strict orders not to run, jump or play for the next 8 weeks. His pressure dressing was removed before discharge and has 17 staples that remain. He’ll go back in 7-10 days to get his staples removed. In 8 weeks he’ll get another X-ray to be sure everything is healing up nice. His surgeon expects his recovery to be 7-10 weeks. Our family has is working together to help keep a calm and comfortable environment for him. Oakley is still taking pain medication around the clock every 8 hours along with anti-inflammatory drugs. In addition, he takes an anti-anxiety and antibiotic every 12 hours. We also do range of motion exercises with him 3 times/day. He is only allowed to go for 5-10 minute walks for the next 8 weeks.
Oakley he is expected to make a full recovery and we are so grateful that.
