Meet Penelope, a 7-week-old Pug who weighs just 1 pound—half the size of her littermates. Born to a backyard breeder, Penelope’s fragile state made it clear she needed urgent care. When she came into our care, she was lethargic, struggling to thrive, and suffering from serious health issues. Penelope’s tiny body has endured so much. She has a ruptured cornea and a detached retina in one eye.

We’re doing everything we can to save her vision, including treatment with specialized eye drops over the next two weeks. However, we won’t know the full extent of the damage until time and treatment tell us more. She’s also dealing with minor defecation issues and requires medication and constant monitoring. Penelope was hospitalized at Vergi 24/7 before coming into our care.

While she’s on the road to recovery, she still needs heat support to help regulate her body temperature. Penelope’s journey is just beginning, and she has a long way to go. Despite her rough start, she’s a fighter, and we’re committed to giving her the best possible chance at a happy, healthy life, but we can't do it alone. Update 12/10/24:
Penelope’s bad eye took a turn and is now shrinking. We’ve already determined with an ophthalmologist that she has no vision in that eye, but we were still hopeful we could save the eye itself.

With it shrinking now, she will likely need it removed. She’s still too tiny and young so surgery will probably wait until she’s old enough for a spay. But she’s doing great in all other aspects and is growing healthy and strong.
