Meet Pokey Jane Wilmeth. She has been my companion since 2017, when she landed in my backyard because a friend rented a non-pet-friendly apartment. My English Setter, Jackson, had been put down in early 2016, my husband had died in 2010 at the age of 56 (I was 52), so Pokey was a gift from God. She came, however, at a difficult time in life, financially (still is) and was intact when I got her.

Pokey has been diagnosed with pyometra today (4/29/26), and after a $475 vet bill today she has been scheduled for surgery on Tuesday, May 5th. To the tune of a max of $4750. at VCA Centreville Veterinary Hospital in Virginia.

Pokey is a mixed beagle/pitbull, and she talks to me. She is the most loyal creature, who knows when I am happy, and sad, and quietly reminds me that all will be well with her cuddles and licks. She loves her cousins (my son's dogs) and his small children - she is eager to befriend other dogs, instantly jealous when I pay attention to others, and listens to me when I talk to myself.

My husband died in 2010, his family sued me which took 3 years of agony and resulted in a small family trust being dissolved to pay lawyers. I declared bankruptcy so as not to lose my home - and have put two children through college with the resulting debt.
