Rocky’s Shocking Condition Tells the Story His Owner Didn’t

When we rescued Rocky, what we found was far worse than anything described to us. This tiny guinea pig had been silently suffering for too long.

Upon surrender, “a little crustiness” was mentioned, but the reality was so much more heartbreaking. Rocky had no poop in his cage, bloody nasal discharge and nails and teeth so overgrown they were spiraling in all directions.

It is a true miracle this little boy was still eating.

Once safe at RBARI, Rocky went straight to the vet. What they found was devastating. A golf-ball-sized mass of impacted fecal material was blocking his perineal pouch, leaving him unable to poop. His teeth were severely overgrown and painful, his nails curling from neglect and he had a large abscess under his chin.

Rocky underwent gentle but intensive medical care. His abscess was treated, aspirated and sent out for diagnostics and his impacted feces was removed (the size was shocking!). He is finally pooping again, finally comfortable, and finally safe.

Rocky’s recovery is just beginning. More dental care, imaging, abscess treatment, and possible surgery lie ahead for this little guy.
