About this campaign

Rusty 15 mos old intact male yellow lab living in foster (to adopt) home since July 15, 2021, born with ‘rotational nystagmus’. Fosters are very experienced lab people living on 25 acres with trails through the woods for Rusty to enjoy. He has been to several training courses, both class and individual settings to help with the challenges resulting from his visual impairment.

Rusty shares the foster with a senior Lab a senior cat; learning to be respectful of the lab & leery of the cat. Mornings Rusty goes for a walk, then breakfast & spends some quiet time before a romp on the property. He spends some time quietly chewing on age appropriate items then accompanies the senior lab on trail walks and then a long nap. He loves his foster family & "helps" with chores.

Rusty has a birth defect impairing his vision. He dances in circles when he is excited (walks, meals, treats!) Despite his vision loss, Rusty has "mapped" the house & the trails through the 25 acre property. It makes us laugh to watch him attempt to chase squirrels, he hears them but ends up running in the opposite direction! Training is unique as he learns differently but he tries so hard!

His condition is complex. He was rushed to emergency on April 27th as he was vomiting blood, and they found an ‘architecturally unsound’ kidney and grossly distended ureter. He was transferred to DMV Montreal to see proper specialists. He underwent emergency life-saving surgery but they found renal degradation and needs many follow-up appointments. He can only stay dry for 3 hours max.

Emergency visit was $2,873.14. The bill from Montreal $11,163.82. On-going post-surgical testing, as of July 20, has cost $2518.83. A grand total of $16,555.79 CAD has been incurred with only $1900 raised so far to help.
