About this campaign

When Sophie arrived at Adopt a Cat Foundation, it was immediately clear that something wasn't right.

This sweet cat had barely settled into rescue when staff noticed her eyes looked abnormal. Concerned that Sophie might be suffering from a painful underlying condition, they arranged for her to be evaluated by a veterinary ophthalmologist. The diagnosis confirmed their fears.

Sophie has a condition called distichia, a painful disorder in which abnormal eyelashes grow from glands along the edge of the eyelids. In Sophie's case, the extra lashes are present in both eyes and constantly rub against her corneas every time she blinks.

Imagine having tiny hairs scratching the surface of your eyes all day, every day. This condition causes significant irritation, excessive tearing, inflammation, and can eventually lead to painful corneal ulcers and permanent eye damage if left untreated. Although Sophie has likely been living with this discomfort for quite some time, she has remained incredibly sweet and resilient. Fortunately, there is a solution.

Sophie's ophthalmologist has recommended a specialized procedure called cryoepilation, which is considered the most effective treatment for permanently removing these abnormal lashes. During the procedure, performed under general anesthesia, a freezing probe is used to destroy the hair follicles responsible for the painful lashes. Once treated, Sophie will finally be able to blink without irritation and enjoy a much more comfortable life.

Adopt a Cat Foundation stepped in to give Sophie the chance she deserves, but specialty eye care comes at a significant cost. Your donation will help cover Sophie's ophthalmology procedure, anesthesia, medications, follow-up care, and recovery expenses. Every dollar brings her one step closer to a future free from chronic eye pain and the risk of permanent vision damage.

Sophie has already waited far too long for relief. Please consider making a donation today and helping this deserving girl see a brighter, more comfortable future.

7/15/26 Update

We have wonderful news to share about sweet Sophie! Thanks to your incredible generosity and support, Sophie has officially undergone her specialized cryosurgery to treat the painful abnormal eyelashes that had been scratching her eyes with every blink. The procedure went well, and she is now recovering safely at Adopt a Cat Foundation under the loving care of our dedicated volunteers.

For what was likely a very long time, Sophie lived with constant irritation and discomfort caused by distichia. Every blink brought painful lashes rubbing against the surface of her eyes. Thanks to this surgery, those abnormal hair follicles have been treated, giving Sophie the opportunity to heal and finally experience the comfort she has been missing.

Right now, Sophie's days are filled with lots of rest, medications, gentle monitoring, and plenty of love. Our volunteers are making sure she stays comfortable as her eyes recover, and she has been taking everything in stride with the same sweet, gentle personality that captured all of our hearts from the very beginning.

While she still has some healing ahead of her and will continue with follow-up care to ensure her eyes are recovering as expected, we are incredibly hopeful that this procedure will give Sophie lasting relief and protect her vision for years to come.

Although Sophie is on the road to recovery, her journey isn't over. Her specialized ophthalmology care and surgery resulted in a veterinary bill of more than $1,500, and Adopt a Cat Foundation is still working to raise the funds needed to cover this lifesaving treatment.

If you're able, please consider making a donation to help offset Sophie's medical expenses. Every contribution, no matter the size, directly supports her care and allows the rescue to continue saying "yes" to other cats who need specialized treatment. Your kindness gave Sophie the chance to live without constant eye pain, and your continued support will help ensure more cats like her receive the second chance they deserve.

8/8/26 Update

Sweet Sophie has had a bit of a setback following her specialized eye surgery. After undergoing her cryosurgery to treat the painful abnormal eyelashes caused by distichia, Sophie unfortunately developed an upper respiratory infection.

Her breathing is currently quite sniffly, and she is now receiving daily medications to help her fight the infection and get back to feeling like herself. Thankfully, her dedicated caregivers are keeping a close eye on her and making sure she gets the medication and supportive care she needs.

Despite this bump in the road, Sophie is still on her journey toward a more comfortable future. Her eye surgery gave her the chance to finally escape the constant irritation she had endured, and now her caregivers are focused on helping her recover fully.

💜 Please consider donating to help cover Sophie’s ongoing medical care. Her specialized eye procedure cost more than $1,500, and with this unexpected illness, her veterinary expenses continue to grow.

Every donation helps Adopt a Cat Foundation provide Sophie with the medications, monitoring, and care she needs to get through this setback.

Please keep sweet Sophie in your thoughts and help us cheer her on as she works toward feeling better! 🐾💜
