Sweetie is a ten-year-old Boxer mix in Huntington, WV, who needs $2,000 for urgent tumor removal surgery.

Discarded, weak, and defeated. One By One Animal Advocates believes Sweetie was likely abandoned because of two massive tumors that dangled from her body.

The senior Boxer mix laid on the road for two days, not moving. People posted about her on Facebook. When Heather A. from One By One first heard about the dog, she sprang into action to save her. "The pictures of her lying by the road were heart-wrenching," Heather tells Waggle. "She seemed exhausted. We think she was abandoned or dumped and was too weak to move."

Heather says she shudders, thinking about what was going through Sweetie's mind as she suffered on the street. "I always wonder what their thoughts are. 'Will I die alone?' It's incredibly sad. You just want to wrap her up and tell her, 'We're going to get you help. You'll never be left again.'"

Volunteers picked Sweetie up in the nick of time and hustled her to an animal emergency room. That's where the medical team found Sweetie appeared to have been neglected for some time. Her toenails had grown back into the pads of her feet. The veterinarian had to sedate her to trim them back. It would be too painful to do otherwise. Sweetie was also put on antibiotics and given urgent care.

Soon after, the group brought Sweetie to Proctorville Animal Clinic to follow up on the tumors that hung from her abdomen. The veterinarian recommends the masses be removed and sent to pathology. Everyone is concerned the growths might be cancerous.

One By One is ready to give Sweetie the love and care she needs. They're frantically trying to raise the money required for her surgery and follow-up care. They want Sweetie to know they will always take care of her. "It's heartbreaking when you don't know her backstory," Heather says. "You're trying to give someone the benefit of the doubt, but experience sends you down a different path. We vow to give her all the treatment options available."
