Tiny Theo Is Fighting for Every Breath. Help This Little Survivor Keep Going

Theodore came into Tiny Cat Animal Rescue's (TCAR) care before his eyes were even open. TCAR was working with a family near the DC/Maryland border who feed a colony of unaltered community cats when one of those cats, a mom, gave birth on a porch. Once a foster was ready, TCAR collected the whole family: the mom, later named Chippie, and four newborn kittens — three boys, Theo, Alvin, and Simon, and their sister Chipette. Within a week, it was clear Chipette wasn't going to make it. She passed away despite everyone's best efforts, from respiratory illness. Chippie wasn't improving much either; after two weeks of antibiotics with no real progress, a vet visit revealed that she's FIV positive.

At five weeks old, Theodore's eyes wouldn't stay open. They were crusted shut with discharge that wouldn't clear no matter what his foster tried. By six weeks, he'd stopped eating on his own. His bloodwork showed that he was anemic and fighting a serious infection, but his foster kept at it, giving him eye ointments, antibiotics, and steam showers to help him breathe. And for a little while, it looked like he was turning a corner.

On 7/22, at seven weeks old, Theodore weighed just 1.4 pounds, his left eye had swollen shut around a deep ulcer on his cornea, and his breathing had gone from bad to alarming. An X-ray revealed that his entire left lung had collapsed and the vet diagnosed him with severe pneumonia. Theodore was put on oxygen in the clinic to stabilize him, then sent home on different medications, including round-the-clock eye drops.

At his 7/29 recheck visit, Theodore had gained weight and his eye was healing, but his left lung still wasn't clearing. An X-ray showed almost no improvement from the week before. His care team has added nebulizer therapy and sent off testing to rule out mycoplasma, a stubborn respiratory infection.

Every recheck, every X-ray, every round of bloodwork and medication adds up — and Theodore isn't done yet. He still needs ongoing vet visits, his full medication regimen, and possibly further diagnostics. Additionally, because of Chippie's FIV positive diagnosis, Theo's own FIV status is still an open question: kittens nursed by an FIV positive mother can test positive themselves from her antibodies alone, without being infected, so he and his brothers won't have a reliable answer until they're retested around six months old. It's one more layer of uncertainty on top of an already fragile recovery.

Despite everything, Theo is still just a kitten. He loves Churu treats and being swaddled, falls asleep held against his foster's chest while he gets his oxygen, and still nurses from Chippie even now, at almost ten weeks old. But Theodore ("Sweet Theo") is also a fighter and, with your help, Theodore gets to keep fighting.

Theo has a severe, ongoing case of pneumonia. While a week of treatment has brought some improvement, his lungs have barely changed on repeat imaging. Results from a respiratory PCR panel revealed Theo has Calicivirus. While his medication routine stays the same unless his symptoms get worse, he now needs to be separated from his siblings and mom to minimize the risk of his family getting it.

His care so far has included:

\\- Two full-body X-ray series (7/22 and 7/29), plus radiologist consultation

\\- A F.A.S.T ultrasound - Oxygen chamber support to stabilize his breathing

\\- Corneal staining and ongoing treatment for a deep corneal ulcer, now healing well

\\- Seven medications and counting: azithromycin and Clavamox (failed early on), clindamycin, doxycycline, tobramycin and erythromycin for his eye, and now nebulizer therapy for his lungs
