About this campaign

Tonya joined the herd at Sacramento Camp and Conference Center in the spring of 2016. She came to camp from The Good Shepherd Ranch. She is a current keystone trail horse in our line-up. She is also a mother! Her son Ranger is 5 years old and slowly learning the ropes to be just as good a trail horse as his mom. As of 2025 her herd family is 18 horses strong.

During a routine visit in August of 2025 our vet, Dr. Heather, took a sample of a small mass in Tonya's eye and submitted it for a histopathology. The results showed that Tonya had a squamous cell carcinoma. You can read the full report in Tonya's photos. Dr. Heather referred us to the ophthalmology vet from the VCA who is available to treat Tonya at Albuquerque Equine Hospital.

Tonya is a big girl who is awe inspiring from the ground and a trail favorite. She now wears a 90% UV protection fly mask during rides to protect her eye, which we describe to guests as her UV sunglasses. Tonya and her best friend Blush gave birth to their foals within two weeks of each other 5 years ago.

As a nondenominational Christian nonprofit, Sacramento Camp & Conference Center provides vet, dental, & special care for our herd year-round within a fixed budget . We’re committed to giving Tonya the best care possible without reducing the support our other horses' needs.
