About this campaign
Tortola nickname Tortega is a desert tortoise. My son and I got him from an elderly friend from California. She is a happy and energetic 7 years old before her injury. My son built a screened cage for her which mimic a natural habitat and big enough for her to move around. Because of her small size, it’s not safe for her to roam around in the backyard. Oftentimes, we took her out of her house.
Tortola’s both hands were severly injured. We assumed a rat was able to get into his cage and did the damage. We took her to the Creature Comforts Animal Hospital in Las Vegas under Dr. Renee Hussey for emergency treatnent. Dr. Hussey informed us about 3 options. First, to put her to sleep, amputate the hands or try antibiotics. We chose the last option for now. Today, we did her 2nd follow up.
Tortola or Tortega is very special. We watched her grow from a very tiny tortoise the size of a tablespoon to the size of an adult palm. She loves eating dandellion, romaine lettuce and strawberries. My son is an only child and considered Tortola as her sibling . My son plays with her and put her on his bed. Give her a bath when the temperature is hot. Tortola loves being scratch on the belly.
We took Tortola for her follow up today, Ap.17. The Vet told us her wounds are not totally healed yet and still need amputation on both hands. She might develop infection. I am a single mother and have fixed income. My son and I love Tortola and hoping she gets better
