About this campaign
Winkles' family thought they were preparing to welcome puppies. Instead, they were faced with a devastating medical emergency that threatened her life.
When Winkles began showing signs of severe pain, vomiting, frequent urination, lethargy, and a swollen abdomen, her devoted mom feared she was about to give birth. Living on a limited income while caring for her mother with advanced dementia, she simply didn't have the financial resources to seek veterinary care sooner. Despite the challenges she faces—including using a wheelchair most of the time and recently being diagnosed with breast cancer—she refused to give up on Winkles and reached out to the Humane Society - Western Region for help.
We immediately began calling veterinary clinics and was able to secure an emergency ultrasound that same afternoon. The results were heartbreaking. Winkles wasn't pregnant. She was suffering from a closed pyometra, a life-threatening bacterial infection that fills the uterus with pus. Without emergency surgery, the infected uterus could rupture, releasing toxins into her bloodstream and causing sepsis, septic shock, and death. Every minute mattered.
The first veterinary hospital quoted nearly $2,500 for the lifesaving surgery. Fortunately, even though our regular veterinarian was unexpectedly unavailable due to his own medical emergency, another veterinarian covering the practice was able to perform the surgery within hours at a much more affordable cost.
Winkles underwent emergency surgery to remove her infected uterus and ovaries before the infection became fatal. After such a difficult day, she was exhausted but finally on the road to recovery. Because the veterinary hospital was short-staffed, the veterinarian even took Winkles home to personally monitor her recovery for several days, ensuring she received the care and attention she needed.
Now, the Humane Society - Western Region is asking for your help to cover the cost of Winkles' lifesaving care.
