Athena

Athena is a seven-week-old Domestic Shorthair kitten in St. Cloud, FL, who needs $2,000 for treatment of a spinal injury.

St Cloud, FL • Helping Paws Humane Society

A good Samaritan came along at the right time to save Athena, who children were torturing! "He was at work and noticed a few kids together, poking at something. He kept an eye on the kids, and when he heard little screams, he quickly chased the children away. What he found was horrifying," Helping Paws Humane Society tells Waggle. The man quickly scooped up the kitten and brought her inside. He fed her, kept her warm, and brought her home with him for the evening. But soon, he realized something was wrong. She was unable to walk and dragged her little legs behind her. He called around to local shelters and rescues, but none would take Athena until he got in touch with Helping Paws. When the group heard about the kitten, they brought her right over to Tender Hearts Animal Hospital, where the medical team discovered the Athena suffered a spinal injury. She now needs an evaluation with a neurologist, potential surgery, and ongoing care. "The veterinarian says Athena is active, eats well, and is capable of urinating on her own, which means she has a chance! She also has feeling in her hind limbs and tail, which is very promising," the rescue says. The group hopes the Waggle community will assist Athena in getting the treatment she needs. "Athena deserves a chance at life! With your help, she can have the opportunity for a long, purrfect life."

Chic Filet

Chic Filet is a 2-year-old DSH in St. Cloud, FL, who needs $1,800 for urinary blockage.

St Cloud, FL • Helping Paws Humane Society

CHICKFILET came into my life 2 years ago, walking around my house spraying my doors and fighting with the other community cats. I decided to do TNR. When he was trapped, he was very aggressive and mad. After that I released him close to my house, and he ran away. A month later, he started to come to eat but hid from us. Little by little he started to trust us. Every single day when I opened the sliding door, he was waiting for his food and water. After eating he leaves and comes back for lunch and dinner. During the storms and fireworks, we let him come into the house because he was afraid of the noise. He never fought with my 2 indoor cats; he was always reverent with my cats. Chic filet came into my life during my pregnancy. My son learned to touch him gently, and was not scared. Now, I’m not working, and I have the big responsibility to pay the invoice for all that the vet did trying to save Chic filet’s life. In the past when ChickFilet has had a wound or injury we have provided for his vet care. Last week he came to eat and he could not walk. He didn’t eat, and he was unable to urinate. We brought him to the vet, and he had urinary blockage. After the procedure, he stayed in the clinic 5 days with IV fluids and antibiotics. He was not able to recover. My husband chose the name because Chic filet because his appearance is like a little cow. One day he started to come inside to the front door. He stays for a little time with us, playing with a catnip mouse, and then he just desires to go out again. This is our routine every single day, but we enjoy care for him and keep him safe.

Comet

Comet is a one-year-old Domestic Shorthair cat in St. Cloud, FL, who needs $2,000 for leg surgery.

St Cloud, FL • Helping Paws Humane Society

The list of abuse Comet endured is long, but his spirit remained strong despite everything he went through. A woman spotted Comet and saved him. He was limping and had an eye injury. It was clear he had been abused. She contacted Helping Paws Humane Society, who immediately took the cat into their rescue and brought him to the animal hospital. "The vet took X-rays which revealed he had pellets lodged all over his body! In his head, in his eye, in one of his elbows, and in his abdomen. He was limping because his leg was infected and broken in four different places," Karen B., with the rescue, tells Waggle. Comet needs immediate surgery to amputate his leg at Saint Francis Animal Hospital. It's such a mangled mess; unfortunately, there's no orthopedic surgery that can fix it. Comet's eye will also be removed in the future because of the pellet wound. Incredibly, he seems to know he's been saved and is finally in a safe place. He's expected to get around well with three legs. "He's a great cat. He's very affectionate," Karen says. "He is always circling around people's legs the best he can. He's purring all the time." The rescue says they need donations to help Comet get on the road to recovery. "Comet deserves a chance at a great life with a loving family," Karen adds. "Being able to provide him with the medical care and treatment he needs means the world to our volunteers."

Blaire (Gertie)

Blaire is a seven-month-old Domestic Shorthair kitten in St. Cloud, FL, who needs $2,000 for corrective surgery.

St Cloud, FL • Helping Paws Humane Society

Blaire is battling the odds, making progress, and needs your help! The kitten's story with Helping Paws Humane Society begins even before she was born. Someone abandoned a pregnant cat locked inside an animal carrier at a playground. Kind people discovered the mama cat, saved her, and got in touch with Helping Paws. That cat was Blaire's mother. "Unfortunately, we see animals dumped all too often. It is really cruel. Luckily, someone found her and got her to the right place," Karen B., with the rescue, tells Waggle. When the mother cat gave birth, Blaire was part of the litter. But shortly after Blaire was born, the rescue noticed her back feet were not quite right; they face inward and are somewhat twisted. She isn't able to walk well, and drags her back legs. It turned out Blaire has a congenital condition (called bilateral tarsal deformity) that affects how her tendons connect her legs to her feet. "Two veterinarians said we should euthanize Blaire," Karen says. "But she was so vibrant and sweet we said, 'No, we have to do all we can to help her.'" The rescue found a specialist for Blaire's case, Dr. Cheryl Tano, at BluePearl Hospital. The kitten's medical team is trying splints and surgeries to help her walk again. If they don't do anything, Blaire's condition will only get worse. "I am in love with this little girl and constantly amazed by what she can do despite her disability," Lisa L., who is Blaire's foster mom, tells Waggle. "She’s had one surgery and will have a second on her other back leg, but all that takes time and money." The rescue relies on donations to help pay for animals' veterinarian care. The nonprofit group hopes they can raise enough to get Blaire the care she needs for a chance to walk. "She has such a bad situation she didn't ask for," Karen says. "By donating, you're making it possible for her to get her surgery. Thank you!"
