SHORT ON FUNDS?
Raise money to help cover your pet's veterinary bill
Waggle is a nonprofit crowdfunding platform that helps pet parents raise money for veterinary care. Creating a campaign is free, and all funds raised go directly to your veterinarian.
Create a campaignIf your family pet needs treatment you can't afford, there are various ways you can raise part or all of the funds you need. Many are dependent on your credit score. Fundraising isn’t. Anyone can use a crowdfunding platform to raise money. In this article, we compare two crowdfunding platforms: GoFundMe and Waggle.
Both GoFundMe and Waggle allow animal welfare organizations and individual pet parents to create fundraising campaigns. For our purposes, we’re focusing on pet parent campaigns only, to help you understand your options as a pet parent who needs to raise funds independently.
While GoFundMe is the platform you may be most familiar with, Waggle is a nonprofit crowdfunding platform built specifically to help fund veterinary care for pets in need. It is not a general fundraising site like GoFundMe. The entire process, from setting up a pet parent campaign to paying the bill, is designed to help ensure your pet has access to care. While both platforms can help you raise money for care, they handle donations very differently.
Both platforms allow you to start a campaign for free. With GoFundMe, a transaction fee of 2.9% + $0.30 is deducted from each donation. With Waggle, nothing is deducted from donations. Instead, a 15% processing fee is added at checkout and paid by the donor, so 100% of every gift goes towards your campaign.
The platforms also handle the money differently. GoFundMe sends the funds raised to your bank account. Waggle sends them directly to your veterinary provider, not to you. That gives donors extra reassurance that their gifts are going toward your pet’s veterinary care, which can encourage more people to donate and increase the funds you raise.
GoFundMe and Waggle compared
The information below reflects each platform's own pricing, help, and terms pages, as of September 2026. Terms may change, so check their websites before you launch a campaign.
| GoFundMe (personal fundraiser, US) | Waggle (pet parent’s veterinary fundraiser) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost to start | Free | Free |
| Fee per donation | GoFundMe deducts a 2.9% + $0.30 transaction fee from each donation, reducing the amount your fundraiser raises | Waggle does not deduct anything. Instead, a 15% processing fee is added to the donation amount and paid by the donor, so you receive 100% of funds donated. |
| Optional extra | Donors can leave a tip for GoFundMe | Donors can leave a tip for Waggle |
| Where the money goes | Into your bank account | Directly to your veterinary clinic, in order to protect donor security |
| How can the funds be used? | Any way you choose, regardless of donor intentions (GoFundMe has no built-in accountability) | For the veterinary care of the pet named in the campaign only |
| What if you raise more than your goal? | You can use extra funds any way you choose, regardless of donor intentions (GoFundMe has no built-in accountability) | Waggle uses any surplus to help other pets in crisis, in line with what donors intended |
| Tax status for donors | Donations to personal fundraisers are generally not tax-deductible | Donations to pet parent fundraisers are generally not tax-deductible. |
How much does GoFundMe take, and what does Waggle cost?
GoFundMe won’t charge you a fee to start or run a personal fundraiser in the US, but it will deduct a transaction fee of 2.9% + $0.30 from every donation you receive in order to cover credit card and bank processing. So, from a $50 donation, you’ll receive $48.25 after fees.
Waggle is also free to start. However, rather than deducting a processing fee from each donation, they add the 15% fee at checkout, which is paid by the donor. So, from a $50 donation, you receive the full $50.
Here's a comparison of what you could end up raising from each platform if you were to run a pet parent campaign that receives 40 donations of $50 each:
| GoFundMe | Waggle | |
|---|---|---|
| Amount donated toward your pet | $2,000 | $2,000 |
| Fees | $70 deducted from donations | $0 deducted from donations |
| Total paid by donors | $2,000, plus any optional tip | $2,300, plus any optional tip |
| Amount available for veterinary bill | $1,930 | $2,000 |
The trade-off is straightforward: donors pay slightly less overall through GoFundMe, but transaction fees reduce the amount you receive. With Waggle, donors pay the processing fee on top, allowing the full amount they choose to donate to go toward your pet's campaign.
Where the money goes
This is the biggest practical difference, and it matters more than the fee.
With GoFundMe, donations land in your bank account or a beneficiary's. You then allocate the funds. There is no built-in security to assure donors that their gifts will go toward your pet’s veterinary care.
With Waggle, donations never pass through your hands. Your veterinarian sends Waggle the invoice, and Waggle verifies it and pays the animal hospital directly on your behalf. This assures donors that their gifts will go toward your pet’s veterinary care. By removing a common concern among donors (“will this money actually be used to help the pet?”), this added layer of security helps build trust, potentially encouraging more people to give and increasing the total amount raised.
Worth knowing
If a Waggle campaign raises more than the final bill, or treatment doesn't go ahead, surplus funds are used to help other pets in crisis through Waggle's nonprofit work.
Which one is best for your situation?
GoFundMe may be the better fit if:
you’re fundraising for expenses beyond your pet’s veterinary bill
Waggle may be the better fit if:
you prefer to use a platform designed specifically for pets in need, rather than a general-purpose fundraising site
your primary goal is to raise as much as possible toward a veterinary bill, without processing fees being deducted from donations
you want to assure donors that their gifts will be used for verified veterinary care and paid directly to the provider
you'd value having your campaign listed on Waggle's Pets in Crisis page, with the possibility of additional support through matching grants or sponsorships
Whichever you choose, you don't have to rely on crowdfunding alone. Ask your clinic about payment options, look into charitable grants you may qualify for, and start your fundraiser as early as possible to give yourself the best chance of covering the cost of care.
Are pet fundraiser donations tax-deductible?
Regardless of which platform you use, if you, as an individual (versus an organization), are running the campaign, donations are generally considered a personal gift and are therefore not tax-deductible.
Creating a campaign is free, fast, and easy
Because the Waggle platform is designed exclusively for pets in need of veterinary care, the entire process, from getting your fundraiser up and running to paying your veterinary bills, is streamlined to make the experience as quick and seamless as possible.
Here's how it works:
Answer a few questions about your pet and their medical needs, and upload some images. Waggle guides you through this process step by step.
Provide your veterinarian’s information and treatment details for Waggle to review.
Once your campaign submission is approved and your fundraiser goes live on Waggle’s Pets in Crisis page, you can share the link with friends, family, and social media to start raising money to cover your pet’s care.
When treatment is done, your veterinary clinic sends Waggle the invoice and Waggle pays them directly.
