Tiny Sugar Glider Camillio: Help Him Heal After a Life of Neglect

Round Rock, TX • Austin Texas Sugar Glider Rescue

When Camillio arrived at Austin Texas Sugar Glider Rescue, his tiny body told a heartbreaking story. He was weak, severely dehydrated, and trembling from the effects of prolonged malnutrition. Within minutes of intake, he suffered a seizure — the first of two that day — and we rushed to stabilize him with fluids and glucose. For hours, he lay snuggled against us, fighting to stay alive. Camillio’s previous diet had been tragically inadequate. His body was in crisis from calcium deficiency, dehydration, and malnutrition. But Camillio is a fighter. Two months later, he’s already made incredible progress: he’s gained weight, his hydration is normal, and his soft gray fur has regained its shine. Most importantly, he hasn’t had a single seizure since that first day. Still, Camillio’s recovery is far from over. His gums remain severely inflamed and painful, and we’re treating him daily with calcium gluconate for possible Metabolic Bone Disease, along with anti-inflammatories to ease his discomfort. He needs continued medical care, supplements, and proper nutrition to fully heal. Please help us give Camillio the chance to live the healthy, happy life he deserves. Every dollar helps cover his ongoing treatments and ensures that no sugar glider has to suffer the way he did. 1/16/26 Update Camillio continues to show quiet but meaningful signs of progress, and we’re so grateful to everyone who has helped him get this far. With consistent, appropriate nutrition and ongoing medical care, Camillio is slowly growing stronger each day. He’s maintaining a healthy hydration level, gaining weight steadily, and responding well to treatment. His inflamed gums are still a concern, but with daily care and medication, we’re seeing gradual improvement and reduced discomfort. Recently, Camillio had additional veterinary testing to help us better understand the underlying causes of his oral inflammation and ensure we’re on the right path with his treatment plan. We are currently awaiting those results and will share an update as soon as we have more information. Camillio has already come so far from the fragile glider who arrived trembling and seizing in our care. While his journey isn’t over yet, every step forward is a testament to his resilience—and to the support that has made his recovery possible. If you’re able, please consider donating to Camillio’s care. Your contribution helps cover ongoing veterinary visits, diagnostic testing, medications, supplements, and the specialized nutrition he needs to continue healing. Every dollar truly makes a difference—and brings Camillio one step closer to a healthy, pain-free life. Thank you for standing with Camillio and helping us give him the chance he deserves. 3/13/26 Update Thanks to the incredible generosity of Waggle donors, Camillio has officially completed Step 1 of his medical treatment plan —and we are so grateful for the support that made this progress possible. Recent veterinary testing brought some very positive news. Camillio’s bloodwork shows that he is recovering from the extreme malnutrition he suffered before rescue, and his levels are currently within healthy ranges. Because of this improvement, we were even able to discontinue the daily calcium gluconate treatments he previously required. However, his X-rays revealed just how much his body has endured. Even though Camillio has gained nearly 30 grams since entering rescue, imaging showed that he still has almost no body fat. His little body is still rebuilding after months of neglect, and he will need continued nutritional support to regain strength. While under light sedation, our veterinarian was also able to perform a thorough dental exam to investigate the painful bleeding we had been seeing in his mouth. They discovered a large piece of hardened plaque (calculus) hidden beneath the gumline of his bottom incisors. Thankfully, it was successfully removed. Dental X-rays showed that Camillio’s teeth themselves appear healthy, but severe gingivitis has loosened two of his molars, and there is a strong possibility they will need to be extracted during his next procedure. There was one additional finding we will be monitoring closely: his X-rays showed a possible bladder stone, which our veterinary team will continue to watch carefully as his recovery continues. \### Step 1 Treatment — Completed Because of your donations, Camillio has already received: • Two weeks of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories to treat gingivitis • Time to rest and regain weight while his body heals • Monitoring to see whether medication stabilizes the gums around his loose molars \### Next Step: Part 2 of Camillio’s Treatment Camillio will need to go under full sedation for the next stage of his care, which will include: • Repeat dental X-rays • A full dental cleaning • Possible molar extractions • Follow-up bloodwork if needed The estimated cost for Part 2 of Camillio’s treatment is $759.01 – $937.37. Camillio didn’t end up in this condition because someone planned for him to receive proper care. He’s here because people failed him. But thanks to this community, his story doesn’t have to end that way. Every donation helps us continue Camillio’s treatment, rebuild his strength, and give this resilient little glider the healthy future he deserves. Thank you for standing with Camillio and helping us show him what real care looks like. 5/28/26 Update We are thrilled to share that Camillio has officially completed the major stages of his medical treatment, and we couldn't have gotten here without the incredible support of Waggle donors. When Camillio first arrived at Austin Texas Sugar Glider Rescue, he was fighting for his life. Severely dehydrated, malnourished, and suffering from calcium deficiency, he experienced multiple seizures within hours of intake. His tiny body was exhausted, and his future was uncertain. Today, Camillio is a completely different glider. Thanks to months of specialized care, proper nutrition, medications, diagnostic testing, and veterinary treatment, Camillio has regained his strength and stability. His bloodwork improved dramatically, allowing us to discontinue the daily calcium treatments he once depended on. His dental procedures addressed the painful inflammation and plaque buildup that had been causing him so much discomfort, and his veterinary team has been able to carefully monitor the other health concerns identified during his recovery. Most importantly, Camillio has not experienced any additional seizures since the day he entered rescue. He is active, bright, eating well, and continuing to thrive under the care of the rescue team. While Camillio will always benefit from ongoing monitoring and excellent nutrition, he has overcome obstacles that once seemed impossible. His recovery is a testament to what can happen when a vulnerable animal is given a second chance and a community rallies behind them. From all of us at Austin Texas Sugar Glider Rescue, thank you for believing in Camillio. Your donations helped provide lifesaving veterinary care, diagnostics, medications, dental treatment, nutritional support, and countless hours of hands-on care. Because of your generosity, Camillio's story became one of healing instead of heartbreak. Thank you for helping us give this resilient little glider the healthy future he deserves.
