Buttons is an 11-year-old orange sweetheart who first belonged to my mother, who passed away in February. Since then, she has settled perfectly into our home. She lives indoors only now, alongside the rest of our fur family, and fits seamlessly into daily life. Named for her small nose — Buttons — she is a living link to my mom, a daily reminder wrapped in fur and quiet affection. She brings comfort even on the hardest of days. Buttons isn’t just a cat with a medical issue; she’s personality, love, history, and resilience all packed into a tiny body that’s a force of love. She is extraordinarily gentle, insists on being held like a baby instead of just sitting in a lap, carries her toys proudly, and meows with joy while playing. She even insists on baked chicken with her meals, mixed just right with her wet food and treats. A few months before my mother passed, Buttons developed a serious eye injury. At her first vet visit, it wasn’t immediately threatening, so we thought we had time to prepare. Last week, her condition worsened suddenly. Her vet now recommends surgery to remove the eye within the month. Surgery is non-negotiable for her comfort and safety.
