Our search for a companion spanned several days, but the moment we laid eyes on him, we knew our journey was over. There was an instant, undeniable connection. We actually joked that he looked exactly like a dog someone would call Max—and to our surprise, that was already his name. It was the first of many signs that he belonged with us. Max isn't just a pet, he’s a fixture of our lives. Max has cancer—a mass near his jugular vein. Vets suggest a full scan to see if it spread. He’s acting like himself but is far from comfortable, with night coughing fits from the pressure on his neck. We’re so scared that if it grows, it’ll stop his breathing. After 10 years of love, seeing him struggle to just breathe and rest is absolutely devastating. Max is the ultimate sweetheart. He even jumped into a friend’s car once just to meet her dog and became instant best friends! He’s always been a "menace" for friendship and has an uncanny intuition for when you’re sick. He was averse to Buddy at first, but now he’s his guide. We used to blame Max for the holes in the yard, but it was both of them! Max really led Buddy in good—and bad—directions. Max is our heart and my daughter's shadow. As a single-parent home, the cost for Max's scans is more than we can raise alone.
