Our lil’ guy came into our lives as a shelter puppy in December of 2013 but was born on September 27th of that year. He is our third husky, but we’ve had other dog breeds most of our lives and they too came from rescue shelters. He was a precious rascal that helped heal our emotional wounds after the passing of our previous huskies. We named him after the great city of Kodiak, Alaska. It is a 3 generation tradition to have double E’s at the end of our pups name that reflects my name, my daughters and granddaughters and their pups. My husband, now 81, has many cardiac and other health issues and needs Kodee as an emotional support. Kodee is playful and likes to “trade” a treat for the things he steals from his Dad and this has been an ongoing playful interaction between them. Kodee understands and learns more words than we are able to keep up with. We have to use alternate words for treat, walk, outside, potty and does all the usual tricks on command like sit, shake, touch. But he learns quickly and knows,”trade”, “find it” or “find the red-one” meaning find the red kong. We have special treats that go into the kong and that is his favorite dessert and playtime. In the last couple of years Kodee has developed what appear to be benign growths on his body. However, one has grown on his left eyelid. The problem is that the vet said it was likely scratching the eyeball and lid and causing irritation. We know this is true because Kodee now has been scratching it and causing it to bleed. This in turn, could cause infections and lead to him losing his eye. We are seniors living on a tight fixed social security income and also have mounting medical bills along with Kodee’s. The vet is compassionate and wants to help but the estimate is out of reach for us. We want our sweet boy pain free.
