I rescued Sage and her sister, Poppy, from an avocado ranch during the peak of COVID. Sage is the sweetest, most playful, most acrobatic, and talkative cat I’ve ever met. Sage has suddenly been diagnosed with a neurological condition- T3 caudal myelopathy. Her spinal cord is being compressed and as a result, she is unable to use her hind legs and is in a lot of pain. The wonderful veterinary team at Veterinary Medical and Surgical Group in Ventura say that with advanced imaging and the right intervention, my sweet Sage can continue to live a long healthy life. Sage is my best friend. She follows me everywhere and loves to sit on my shoulders while I go about my day. When I come home from work, she is always waiting by the door meowing for me. In her short 5 years, we’ve been through a lot together, including a pandemic, a breakup, and unemployment. She is a major reason why I’ve kept going when things were darkest. Unfortunately, the care Sage needs is costly specialized neurological imaging and treatment. I work at a local nonprofit helping the unhoused and while I love my job, I don’t make enough money to afford the treatment, without which Sage will not survive despite only being 5.

Scout came into our lives 5 years ago. He became a steady presence in our home. We adopted him from the shelter at just 12 weeks old. On his first day, he wandered our property, climbed a ramp, and quietly studied our son’s small dog, “scouting” how to get in and play. The name stuck. Scout along with his brothers, Ruck and Slim, bring constant laughter, warmth, and little crazy to our lives. Scout has a completely torn ACL caused by running for a ball playing at the beach. He now lives with daily pain and limited mobility. TPLO surgery is the only option to restore stability and prevent further injury. We are seeking surgical care through Veterinary Medical & Surgical Group in Ventura CA, with follow-up care provided locally so Scout can heal and return to a comfortable, active life. Scout has an unusual ability to sense emotional shifts and respond without being asked. He naturally steps in during tense moments, creates calm, and draws people in rather than pushing them away. He opens doors—literally—and understands routines so well he seems to tell time. He even recognizes spelled words like “W-A-L-K” and “T-R-E-A-T.” Veterans often open up around him without realizing why. Helping Scout heal means restoring a dog who gives comfort, calm, and stability to our family and our veteran community every day. The cost of his surgery is more than we can manage alone, and any support toward giving Scout this chance to heal makes it possible for him.
