Little Ernie is a rescue that came into our lives a year ago. The shelter had no background information, but we think that he was a former hunting dog. He had been passed over multiple times because of a past surgery, but was so friendly and cute that we wanted to give him the chance of a loving family home. Ernie has expressive eyes and a wonderful temperament. He is my son’s only pet. We noticed Ernie wasn’t eating much of his kibble and was very lethargic, so the vet worked him up for a dental and found that he was severely anemic. That led to imaging studies revealing an abdominal growth requiring emergency surgery at Specialty and Emergency Veterinary Services in Charlottesville, VA. The tumor was removed from his intestines as was his spleen. Surgical margins wide/clear. Ernie is my son’s shadow. When my son is at work, Ernie goes to doggie daycare and enjoys playing with the other beagles. To my son’s delight he sings when my son picks him up to go home. He adapts well to new situations, adults, children, and other animals. He is social and my son’s perfect companion. Occasionally Ernie stays with his “grandparents” and our four dogs blending seamlessly. Our retirement income has been stretched with financing treatment to this point. Additional cost is anticipated as we consult with an oncologist. Our goal is to increase his lifespan with treatment and monitoring and to provide palliative care as needed. Ernie is family.
