Rescued From a Pond With a Broken Leg: Help Pretzel Heal

When Pretzel was found in a pond at a scrapyard, she was in desperate need of help. This sweet puppy had an open fracture with exposed bone in her back leg and had clearly been suffering for days. She was rushed to an emergency veterinary clinic, where she arrived extremely pale, covered in fleas and ticks, and with maggots around her mouth and wounds. Pretzel was critically anemic and needed a blood transfusion and blood pressure support immediately. This Is Houston put down a $10,000 deposit to make sure she could receive the lifesaving care she needed. Thankfully, Pretzel has been fighting hard. She responded beautifully to her blood transfusion, and her PCV has been slowly improving. Beneath all that fluffy puppy fur, however, Pretzel is incredibly thin with very little muscle mass. Her veterinary team is having to carefully manage her nutrition because she is at risk for refeeding syndrome after being so malnourished. Her injuries have also been extensive. Pretzel had a large hotspot on the right side of her neck that was filled with maggots and required shaving and extensive cleaning. Her most serious injury is to her right tibia, which is fractured, along with several broken toes on that same foot. The ER team spent approximately 1½ hours cleaning and treating her wounds. And the injury wasn't brand new. X-rays showed bone remodeling around the fracture, indicating that Pretzel's leg had likely been broken for 5–7 days before she was rescued. She had been carrying that painful injury while trying to survive. Fortunately, her pelvis and hips look healthy, giving her a much better outlook for the future. After consulting with specialists and getting a second opinion, the veterinary team determined that amputation is the best option for Pretzel. Attempting to save the leg would mean prolonged confinement, multiple procedures, potentially additional surgeries as she grows, and no guarantee that the leg could ultimately be saved. Even more concerning, her injured leg is an active source of infection. Amputation will give Pretzel the best opportunity to heal, get comfortable, and get back to doing what a puppy should be doing — playing, exploring, and enjoying life. Her medical records also revealed several rib fractures that weren't initially known. Thankfully, those injuries should heal on their own and won't require surgery, but they're another reminder of just how much this little girl has endured. Despite everything, Pretzel continues to surprise everyone with how well she's doing. Her PCV is currently holding steady at 18%, so she has thankfully avoided another blood transfusion for now. She's eating well on her own and has transitioned to oral medications. Her amputation is scheduled for Friday. Pretzel's road to recovery is still going to be a long one. She needs surgery, continued monitoring, medications, wound care, nutrition, and ongoing veterinary support as her tiny body heals from her injuries and neglect. But brighter days are ahead for this little girl. Pretzel has already survived the hardest part: being alone, injured, and suffering. Now she just needs the chance to heal. Help Oliver Recover From Severe Neglect and Prepare for Life-Saving Heart Surgery

Oliver is only one year old, but his body tells the story of a puppy who has been through severe neglect. He was surrendered to an emergency veterinary clinic after being severely starved and neglected, arriving with a body condition score of just 1/10. He was critically weak, anemic, and in desperate need of medical care. The emergency vet hospital reached out to This Is Houston for help and we immediately agreed to take him under our rescue. Then veterinarians discovered something else that could have cost Oliver his life: his stomach was packed with foreign material. X-rays showed a large amount of material bunched up inside his stomach. The plan was initially to try to remove it with a scope. But Oliver was an extremely high-risk anesthesia patient, and there was no guarantee the material could be safely retrieved that way. And when surgeons finally opened his stomach, they discovered just how much Oliver had swallowed. Inside was a large sock, completely bunched up in his stomach, along with several pieces of hard blue and black plastic. The sock may have been something Oliver swallowed while desperately searching for something to eat. After being so severely starved, his body was in survival mode, and whatever happened, the result was a dangerous obstruction that left him critically ill. Thankfully, his surgical team was able to remove everything. Before the procedure, his vets discovered that he has a grade 6/6 heart murmur. A cardiac ultrasound confirmed that Oliver has a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), a blood vessel that should have closed shortly after birth but remained open. Combined with his severe anemia and overall weakness, this made anesthesia especially dangerous. the vets knew there was a very real risk — but Oliver needed the foreign material removed. Thankfully, Oliver fought his way through su rgery. He had minimal blood loss and handled anesthesia better than expected. For this little dog who arrived so sick and so thin, making it through this operation was a huge victory. Now, for the first time, Oliver can begin to heal without something obstructing his stomach. He can eat. He can digest his food. He can start putting on weight. He can rebuild the strength that was taken from him through neglect. But his journey isn't over. Once Oliver is stronger and healthier, he will still need surgery to correct his PDA and give his heart the best chance at supporting a normal life. Right now, though, we're celebrating one enormous step forward: the sock, plastic, and other foreign material are out. Oliver has already fought so hard to survive. Now he needs help recovering from everything his little body has endured. Bleu came into my life unexpectedly. My brother gave me Trixie after my other female dog Gorda passed away shortly after bringing her home. I later found out that she had a vagina prolapse. Trixie was my gift to help with the depression from Gordas passing. Shortly after I found out that Trixie was pregnant. She birthed 6 babies and out of the six only two were born alive, I had to keep both Bleu (the 1st born) and Minnie ( the sister). He needs a small procedure that is life-threatening. The vet told me he has an anal prolapse. Tears. I took him to Ark vet. He needs to have a procedure to push the prolapse back in side. Bleu is my son. I bottle fed him from birth up until he can eat on his own. His mom right after birth was having postpartum and tried to hurt him. I woke up with him every couple hours as if he was my own both him and bus sister Minnie. In the mornings when I worked at four, I drove across town to drop them off at my mom so she can watch them while I was at work. They are family to me. I’m so torn that I do not have the funds to pay for his surgery. I recently got laid off from my job, which makes things even harder. I will continue to search. I’m not going to give up on him. I’m so depressed because I know time is not on my side.

Sasha is a total sweetheart. I've been lucky to be her person for four years. She's very spirited and playful. Her favorite activity is fetch and her top talent is catching balls. She loves long walks, peanut butter, and snuggles. I took Sasha to the vet because she was limping. They did x-rays and told me she has a partially torn cruciate ligament in her knee. The ligament is very likely to tear within the next year, requiring surgery costing $4000-5000. She is now restricted from doing her favorite activities (playing fetch and going on walks). Sasha is a very good dog who deserves a chance at a long and healthy life. She has captured my heart with her joyful energy and loving spirit. She's my little shadow, always following me around and wanting to be close to me. Whenever I get home, she greets me enthusiastically and always has a toy in her mouth, wagging her tail. I love her so much. Unfortunately, I cannot afford to pay for her surgery, so I am reaching out to the community for help getting Sasha the care she needs. If I cannot afford the surgery, her condition may worsen, impacting her quality of life to the point where she may need to be put down.

Nala came into my life when my daughter’s best friend was 18 and preparing to join the military. She had Nala as a puppy, and I took Nala in while she left. Even though her plans for the military eventually changed, by then Nala had already become mine and had completely stolen my heart. She has spent her life looking after two younger dogs, a brother and a sister. She’s quiet, gentle, and an incredible watchdog. When we go camping, Nala is always on duty, watching over me and her brother and making sure we’re safe. She has always been my protector, and now I want to be hers. Nala has spent her life protecting and watching over our family. Now, at 9 years old, she is the one who needs us to stand by her. Nala has suffered a ruptured CCL in her left hind leg, leaving her in pain and struggling to walk. Her veterinarian recommends TPLO surgery to stabilize her knee and give her a chance to walk comfortably again. She is also dealing with arthritis and inflammation in her previously operated right knee, hip dysplasia, and severe spinal changes. Nala is receiving care at Yucca Veterinary Medical Center in Belen, New Mexico. She has always been there for us—now we desperately want to be there for her. Nala is so much more than a dog to me—she is family. She has spent her life quietly watching over me, protecting me, and making sure everyone around her is safe. When I go camping with my brother, Nala stays alert and keeps watch over us, always ready to protect us from anything she thinks might hurt us. She has also cared for the younger dogs in my family, taking on the role of their protector. Nala came into my life when my daughter’s best friend was preparing to enter the military. I took Nala in to care for her, never knowing that she would become such an important part of my life. Over the years, she became one of the hearts of my home. She has spent her whole life looking after me and the people she loves. Now she is hurting and needs help simply to walk. I want to give Nala the same love, protection, and devotion she has given me every day of her life. She deserves the chance to be comfortable, happy, and by my side for as long as possible. Nala’s injury happened suddenly, and the cost of the surgery and care she needs is more than I can afford on my own. Her veterinarian has recommended TPLO surgery for her ruptured CCL, and the detailed estimate for her treatment is approximately $4,700. She is struggling to walk, and I don’t want financial hardship to stand between Nala and the care she desperately needs. I’m reaching out to my community because I simply cannot cover this unexpected expense by myself. Nala has spent her entire life protecting my family and caring for those around her.
