About

Tiny Cat Animal Rescue is a volunteer-run, foster-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of cats living on the streets, reducing the number of cats living on the streets, and preventing cats from ending up on the streets in the first place. We lead with compassionate, proactive rescue to protect our community’s most vulnerable cats. Through hands-on intervention, spay/neuter, and ongoing support for cats and their caregivers, we give cats the safe, healthy, and loving futures that they deserve.

Help Sassafras Swirl's Fight for a Healthy Smile

Oakton, VA • Tiny Cat Animal Rescue

Meet Sassafras Swirl-- or as his foster calls him, "our little Jonesy." Just like the ship's cat from Alien, Sassafras Swirl has a survival instinct that just won't quit. Loud noises will send him running for cover, but give him a minute and he'll talk himself back out, ears up and ready to try again. His foster has watched him do this over and over: freeze, assess, and push through. But once Sassafras Swirl is comfortable, he is all personality. He runs a strict two-breakfast, two-dinner household (he's basically a Hobbit), and he will let you know (loudly!) if service is slow. Between portion one and portion two, he expects a non-negotiable five-minute chin-scratch session. In the evenings, he is a lap cat who just wants to soak up love so he can be exactly who he is: a survivor who just wants his people, his food on schedule, and his chin scratched. On 8/26, Sassafras was seen for vomiting, diarrhea, and a dropping appetite. Our vet found that the real culprit was significant dental disease, with root exposure on his canine teeth. Left untreated, this kind of pain doesn't just make eating difficult, it can shut a cat down entirely. Sassafras needs a full dental workup under anesthesia, which includes pre-anesthetic bloodwork, dental radiographs, and extractions. Between diagnostics, sedation, and the extractions themselves, Sassafras's dental treatment will run just over $1,500. But every dollar will go directly to getting him pain-free and back to being the food-motivated, cuddle-demanding little guy his foster adores. Help us get Sassafras Swirl through his dental care so he can eat, love, and find his furever home without pain.

Tiny Theo Is Fighting for Every Breath. Help This Little Survivor Keep Going

Oakton, VA • Tiny Cat Animal Rescue

Theodore came into Tiny Cat Animal Rescue's (TCAR) care before his eyes were even open. TCAR was working with a family near the DC/Maryland border who feed a colony of unaltered community cats when one of those cats, a mom, gave birth on a porch. Once a foster was ready, TCAR collected the whole family: the mom, later named Chippie, and four newborn kittens — three boys, Theo, Alvin, and Simon, and their sister Chipette. Within a week, it was clear Chipette wasn't going to make it. She passed away despite everyone's best efforts, from respiratory illness. Chippie wasn't improving much either; after two weeks of antibiotics with no real progress, a vet visit revealed that she's FIV positive. At five weeks old, Theodore's eyes wouldn't stay open. They were crusted shut with discharge that wouldn't clear no matter what his foster tried. By six weeks, he'd stopped eating on his own. His bloodwork showed that he was anemic and fighting a serious infection, but his foster kept at it, giving him eye ointments, antibiotics, and steam showers to help him breathe. And for a little while, it looked like he was turning a corner. On 7/22, at seven weeks old, Theodore weighed just 1.4 pounds, his left eye had swollen shut around a deep ulcer on his cornea, and his breathing had gone from bad to alarming. An X-ray revealed that his entire left lung had collapsed and the vet diagnosed him with severe pneumonia. Theodore was put on oxygen in the clinic to stabilize him, then sent home on different medications, including round-the-clock eye drops. At his 7/29 recheck visit, Theodore had gained weight and his eye was healing, but his left lung still wasn't clearing. An X-ray showed almost no improvement from the week before. His care team has added nebulizer therapy and sent off testing to rule out mycoplasma, a stubborn respiratory infection. Every recheck, every X-ray, every round of bloodwork and medication adds up — and Theodore isn't done yet. He still needs ongoing vet visits, his full medication regimen, and possibly further diagnostics. Additionally, because of Chippie's FIV positive diagnosis, Theo's own FIV status is still an open question: kittens nursed by an FIV positive mother can test positive themselves from her antibodies alone, without being infected, so he and his brothers won't have a reliable answer until they're retested around six months old. It's one more layer of uncertainty on top of an already fragile recovery. Despite everything, Theo is still just a kitten. He loves Churu treats and being swaddled, falls asleep held against his foster's chest while he gets his oxygen, and still nurses from Chippie even now, at almost ten weeks old. But Theodore ("Sweet Theo") is also a fighter and, with your help, Theodore gets to keep fighting. Theo has a severe, ongoing case of pneumonia. While a week of treatment has brought some improvement, his lungs have barely changed on repeat imaging. Results from a respiratory PCR panel revealed Theo has Calicivirus. While his medication routine stays the same unless his symptoms get worse, he now needs to be separated from his siblings and mom to minimize the risk of his family getting it. His care so far has included: - Two full-body X-ray series (7/22 and 7/29), plus radiologist consultation - A F.A.S.T ultrasound - Oxygen chamber support to stabilize his breathing - Corneal staining and ongoing treatment for a deep corneal ulcer, now healing well - Seven medications and counting: azithromycin and Clavamox (failed early on), clindamycin, doxycycline, tobramycin and erythromycin for his eye, and now nebulizer therapy for his lungs - Bloodwork from his 7/10 visit - A full PCR panel from his 7/29 visit Costs so far: - 7/10 visit: $362.99 - 7/22 emergency visit: $1,052.76 - 7/29 recheck visit: $466.42 - Total incurred through 7/29: $1,882.17 Costs likely still ahead (estimates): - Bloodwork at a future recheck: ~$300 - Continued antibiotics, eye drops, and nebulizer supplies: ~$125 - Buffer for complications, a treatment change if mycoplasma or another pathogen is confirmed, or extended oxygen/hospitalization: ~$350 - Other supportive care: ~$350 Theo has overcome impossible odds since the day he was born. Now he needs compassionate people to stand beside him for the next chapter of his journey. Your tax-deductible donation today will help provide the lifesaving veterinary care Theodore still needs. Every dollar brings this tiny survivor one step closer to healthy lungs, a full recovery, and the chance to grow into the happy kitten he was always meant to be. If you can't donate, sharing Theo's story could help him find the hero he's been waiting for.

Amber Never Got the Chance to Take a Normal First Step — But We’re Fighting to Make Sure She Gets One

Oakton, VA • Tiny Cat Animal Rescue

Amber never got the chance at a normal start. Her mother, June, was rescued from a severely overcrowded and neglectful home while emaciated, exhausted, and heavily pregnant. During what was supposed to be an emergency spay appointment, June went into labor inside the trap. The delivery was traumatic, and two of her kittens did not survive. The three surviving babies were incredibly fragile, and Tiny Cat Animal Rescue stepped in to save the little family. But Amber’s battle was only beginning. At just two weeks old, when kittens should be learning to wobble around on tiny legs, Amber couldn’t stand. Her hind legs were limp, her tail had no movement, and she was rushed for neurological exams and x-rays while weighing less than a pound. Despite every obstacle, Amber has never stopped trying. She scoots across the floor to reach toys, people, and the world around her with determination that is impossible to ignore. She is bright, affectionate, and full of life — and most importantly, she is already showing improvement. With early physical therapy and specialized neurological care, Amber has begun regaining strength and movement in both back legs. Her veterinary team believes continued treatment during this critical stage could make all the difference in her future mobility and quality of life. Amber needs ongoing neurology care, diagnostics, rehabilitation therapy, and supportive treatment to continue the progress she has fought so hard for. Tiny Cat Animal Rescue is committed to giving Amber every chance possible — but we need your help. Please donate today to help this brave little kitten keep fighting for her first real steps. 6/16/26 Update With heavy hearts, we share that sweet Amber has passed away. From the moment she entered our care, Amber faced incredible challenges. Born under traumatic circumstances after her mother, June, was rescued from a severe hoarding situation, Amber began her life fighting to survive. At just two weeks old, she was unable to stand, and early examinations revealed significant neurological concerns affecting her hind legs and tail. Despite every obstacle, Amber never stopped trying. She greeted each day with determination, scooting toward toys, cuddles, and the people who loved her. She showed us what resilience looks like in its purest form, and she inspired everyone who followed her journey with her strength and spirit. Thanks to your generosity, Amber received specialized veterinary care, neurological evaluations, physical therapy, and the supportive treatments she needed. Most importantly, she experienced something every animal deserves: love, comfort, safety, and the unwavering devotion of people who were committed to giving her every chance. Sadly, despite the best efforts of her veterinary team and caregivers, Amber's tiny body could not overcome the challenges she faced. While our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing that Amber never had to suffer alone. She knew gentle hands, warm beds, full bellies, and endless affection during her time with us. Thank you for believing in Amber and for standing beside Tiny Cat Animal Rescue throughout her journey. Your donations made it possible to provide her with compassionate care and dignity every step of the way. Amber's time with us was far too short, but she leaves behind a lasting reminder of why rescue matters: every life, no matter how small or brief, is precious and worthy of love.
