Fabio

Fabio is a 3-year-old Rez Dog in Moab, UT, who needs $2,000 for Cephalexin & Bravecto.

Moab, UT • Underdog Animal Rescue and Rehab- Moab

Underdog Animal Rescue & Rehab found Fabio at a gas station on a vaccine & food run on we had on the Rez. When we saw the severity of Fabio's condition, we knew we absolutely couldn't leave him behind. Thankfully, our wonderful staff were able to gain his trust with food, and we were able to catch him and bring him back to our Rescue Ranch for treatment. It isn't hard to tell that Fabio's life before coming to Underdog was definitely difficult. However, it is hard to tell where this sweet boy came from. Fabio could have been someone's pet who wandered to the gas station looking for food and never returned, his owners could have passed away, or he could have been dumped. Or, he couldve been born and grown up without a human family at all. Even though Fabio came from a less-than-ideal situation, this sweet boy is wonderfully trusting of people and loves other dogs. Despite his condition, Fabio remains happy and resilient, and we know that once he is healthy and neutered, he will make an absolutely amazing companion for any potential adopter. Fabio is suffering from a severe case of demodex mange and several broken teeth. Thankfully, Fabio tested negative for sarcoptic mange, but he still has a long road of recovery ahead of him. When he is healthy enough to be neutered, his broken teeth will also be pulled. Underdog Animal Rescue & Rehab is the only rescue in the state of Utah solely dedicated to rescuing and supporting the estimated 500,000 stray and unwanted pets of the Four Corners Native American Reservation area.

Bernie

Bernie is a one-year-old Mixed in Moab, UT, who needs $1,925 for urgent hip surgery.

Moab, UT • Underdog Animal Rescue and Rehab- Moab

Shortly after Underdog Rescue and Rehab saved Bernie, it became clear he was in pain. "We first noticed something was wrong with Bernie's leg when he was trying to play and didn't seem to want to put his hind leg on the ground," Cheyleen P., with the rescue, tells Waggle. "We quickly got him into the vet to have X-Rays and a checkup. During this appointment, we learned he had a shattered femoral head in his hip." The medical team at Mill Creek Animal Hospital quickly got Bernie into the operating room and performed surgery on his hip to ease his pain. "Once our vet was able to open his leg up to get a closer look, it became evident that the injury was old as there was an immense amount of scar tissue build-up. Bernie had to stay at the vet for three days while undergoing a procedure each day to remove all of the scar tissue," Cheyleen says. The rescue says they are so thrilled to help Bernie. "He is the goofiest, sweetest, most playful boy. Everyone at the rescue ranch here in Moab, UT, instantly fell in love with him upon arrival. He was an amazing office dog as he would just sit and hang out while watching us work. Bernie absolutely loves other dogs and insists on meeting any that come into proximity with him," Cheyleen says. Bernie has a ridiculously expressive face. He makes it so obvious when he is upset or happy. He is beyond trusting and caring as he has only ever known love. Bernie is a velcro dog. He would follow his people to the ends of the earth if it meant that he was with them. Bernie is such a sweet and compassionate companion dog. Now the rescue is frantically trying to raise the money to cover Bernie's veterinary bill. "Here at Underdog, we take every medical case that is presented to us; this creates hefty vet bills," Cheyleen says. "Every donation makes a difference, and we cannot thank all of our donors enough for providing these amazing animals with a fair shot at life."

Erica

Erica is a Chihuahua mix puppy in Moab, UT, who needs $1,724 for urgent surgery.

Moab, UT • Underdog Animal Rescue and Rehab- Moab

Days after Underdog Rescue and Rehab saved Puppy Erica; they noticed she wasn't eating and was losing weight. Her foster family brought her to Mill Creek Animal Hospital, where the medical team ran tests. Then the staff rushed Erica in for exploratory surgery, and good thing they did! "Our surgeon found part of her intestines were compromised, and she needed them removed," Cheyleen P., with the rescue, tells Waggle. "Erica's vet bills have racked up to over $5,000." Now the nonprofit group is rushing again, this time to raise the money to pay Erica's medical tab! "Being able to help sick and injured animals so frequently is something we are blessed to be able to do here at Underdog, and it wouldn't be possible without all of our lovely donors. Every penny helps," Cheyleen says. The rescue wants anyone considering giving to Erica's campaign to know she is worth every penny! "Erica is not like most Chihuahuas," Cheyleen adds. "She is snugly and sweet and not vocal at all. Erica would prefer to be held and snuggled more than anything else. She is sassy and knows she is adorable, and uses it to her advantage. This tiny, little five-pound pup is stronger than most humans we know. Erica deserves a shot at a normal life." In fact, Erica has won the hearts of her foster family! "Erica was placed into foster care so she can heal and recover in the comfort of a loving home," Cheyleen adds. "Her new foster siblings have fallen head over heels, and her foster parents weren't far behind. Erica's lovely foster parents plan to adopt her as soon as she is available. They cannot imagine life without her now." Please help Underdog pay the veterinary bills for their latest underdog!

Frijolito

Frijolito is a Terrier mix puppy in Moab, UT, who needs $2,000 for emergency care.

Moab, UT • Underdog Animal Rescue and Rehab- Moab

Frijolito is in a fight for his life, and he needs your help! The sweet puppy was surrendered to Underdog Rescue and Rehab with his littermates and mother. Then all his puppy siblings took a turn for the worse and passed away. "It was tragic," Chey P., with the group, tells Waggle. The staff whisked Frijolito to Mill Creek Animal Hospital and got grave news: He had Parvo, a potentially deadly virus, and he was hypoglycemic. The medical team quickly started the pup on IVs of medications and fluids. "We were so worried about him," Chey says. "He was so small, but we knew he was a fighter." The pup spent days at the hospital getting critical care, resulting in a $3000 bill for the rescue. The nonprofit group relies on generous pet lovers for these expensive medical cases, and they're trying to raise the money to pay for Frijolito's tab. "Our policy here at Underdog is 'no dog left behind,' this means we take in all of the medical cases. No matter how large. Donations are the only reason we can do this," Cheyleen P., with the rescue, tells Waggle. Underdog is already starting to see signs of improvement in Frijolito, and he's now out of the hospital. "Once he's healed up, he will be up for adoption. We are so thrilled. We want to say a huge thank you to anyone who donates to his campaign. This was an unexpected and emergency bill for us," Chey says. Please help Frijolito's 2022 be merry and bright!

Photo of Rascal

Rascal

Rascal is a 1-year-old Mixed Breed in Moab, UT, who needs $1,200 for Double Femur Surgery.

Moab, UT • Underdog Animal Rescue and Rehab- Moab

We noticed something was wrong when Rascal tried to play and couldn't put his full weight on his back legs. Those breaks had healed on their own. Of course, they didn't heal correctly and one leg was a couple inches shorter than the other. We were horrified to learn of his injuries and that they were almost positively purposefully inflicted by a person. Rascal is the absolute sweetest, most loving and trusting dog! We all instantly fell in love with him here at Underdog. Not to mention, we almost didn't notice he was in pain. He has been through so much trauma and continues to have such an amazing spirit, play with other dogs, and is genuinely so happy to be around people. He is truly a miracle dog! At Underdog, we are at capacity with our rescue dogs so one of our amazing staff agreed to foster Rascal and care for him after his surgery. The amount of dogs just like Rascal is astounding, and with generous donations, we can keep saving lives. We didn't even realize how much pain he was in until Dr. Scott at Mill Creek Animal Hospital had to sedate him in order to x ray his legs. We learned that, unbelievably, he had 2 broken legs. Both of his femurs were broken in the same place and had healed incorrectly. Additionally, we learned that the large scar on his back was likely a burn and he would probably not grow fur there again. How could such a young puppy survive this kind of abuse, still trust and love humans, and be so strong to walk on two broken legs without conveying his pain? Someone had hurt him in an unimaginable way and he was still such a sweet and trusting puppy, following around his foster everywhere she went. We have been astonished by his resilience.

Jasper

Jasper is a two-year-old Lab mix in Moab, UT, who needs $2,000 for critical care.

Moab, UT • Underdog Animal Rescue and Rehab- Moab

Jasper was found struggling to walk to his water bowl in 109-degree heat on a reservation in New Mexico. Originally rescuers thought he had been hit by a car. It was clear he was in agony and needed to get to an animal hospital immediately, but his owner could not afford his care. Someone got in touch with Underdog Rescue, and the organization rushed him to Mill Creek Animal Hospital. He arrived filthy, suffering, and scared. "We aren't totally sure of Jasper's personality," Chiara S., who helped the rescue with Jasper's care, tells Waggle. "We have only seen him in a great deal of pain and very lethargic. However, in my visits to him at the hospital, he has been incredibly sweet. His kind eyes are always happy to see me. I think he knows we are doing everything we can to help him get better!" The rescue soon learned Jasper has a broken back; one of his lower vertebrae is fractured. "The veterinarians wonder if it happened from some sort of downward stress like someone stomped on him, or perhaps something could have fallen on him," Caroline D., with the rescue, tells Waggle. "He's on a lot of medication and still in a lot of pain." Jasper has an entire medical team tending to him. The rescue has spent thousands of dollars on his care, including X-rays, specialists, and medications. He has to remain at the veterinarian's office and on strict rest while they see if his vertebrae will heal on its own. Unfortunately, surgery won't help Jasper, but he is making friends during his long stay at the animal hospital. "Everyone that has come in contact with him has been greeted with a willingness to be helped and sweetness from this injured boy," Chiara adds. "I can't wait to see him get the help needs and make a full recovery." Underdog Rescue is a nonprofit organization that depends on donations to help Jasper and the more than 1400 dogs the group has saved from the Four Corners reservations of the American Southwest. They help provide medical services, spay and neuter resources, and adoption services while supporting Native Americans in the care of their animals. "We know that in situations like this if we don't help the dog, they will likely be left to die," Chiara says. "We do our best to help as many animals from the reservation as we possibly can at Underdog. Knowing Jasper's vet bill will greatly exceed $2,000, any contribution helps."

Gucci Mane is a six-month-old Lab mix in Moab, UT, who needs $2,000 for leg fracture repair.

Moab, UT • Underdog Animal Rescue and Rehab- Moab

Poor Gucci Mane was run over by a car and faced severe injuries. "His accident broke two bones in his leg and three in his pelvis," Chiara S., with Underdog Animal Rescue and Rehab, tells Waggle. The group immediately brought him to Mill Creek Animal Hospital, where the medical team placed him in a cast and put him on strict rest. Then the most amazing thing happened! A veterinary student fell in love with Gucci and offered to foster him. Chiara says Gucci is so loveable she can see how he won hearts at the veterinarian's office. "When someone looks at Gucci, they are immediately attracted to his piercing eyes," she says. "Gucci loves people and knows what happened to him was an accident and is ready to give his two-legged friends another chance." Underdog Rescue is a nonprofit organization that depends on donations to help the more than 1400 dogs the group has saved from the Four Corners reservations of the American Southwest. Arlo

Arlo is a four-year-old Pitbull mix in Moab, UT, who needs $2,000 for emergency leg surgery.

Moab, UT • Underdog Animal Rescue and Rehab- Moab

No one knows what Arlo's life was like before Underdog Rescue saved him, but it was clear he had been through a lot of trauma. His sweet face was covered with scars, and one of his back legs was fractured. "We don't know how the injury happened. It was pretty horrific and severe," Chiara S., with the rescue, tells Waggle. Arlo was in pain and struggling to get around with the terrible wound. He needed surgery immediately to fix it at Mill Creek Animal Hospital. "We're not sure what would have happened to Arlo if Underdog didn't step in to rescue him," Chiara says. "Underdog was faced with a $2,000 surgery to fix his leg, and we didn't even blink. This boy deserves another chance to run on all fours, play comfortably with other dogs, and jump onto the couch for snuggle time." Underdog Rescue is a nonprofit organization that depends on donations to help the more than 1400 dogs the group has saved from the Four Corners reservations of the American Southwest. They help provide medical care, spay and neuter resources, and adoption services while supporting Native Americans in the care of their animals. Arlo was found in Colorado on the Ute Mountain Reservation. Chiara says his soulful eyes and his story inspire her and other rescue members to continue their amazing work. "It's motivation to keep fighting for these animals. We never turn a dog away because of their medical needs. We are a small rescue that relies on our supporters to help us through emergency medical cases," she says. If you can donate to help Arlo get back on his feet again, he would be so appreciative. Once he is fixed up, he will be available for adoption and hopes to finally find his forever family. "Arlo makes sure to communicate his feelings through moans, groans, whines, and whimpers," Chiara adds. "He is a mellow office dog and will be a great companion. Arlo is a sweet boy from the reservation, and (with your help!) he will fight to see another tail-wagging day."

Zelda

Zelda is a 1-year-old Husky Mix in Moab, UT, who needs $2,000 for Stifel (knee) fracture repair.

Moab, UT • Underdog Animal Rescue and Rehab- Moab

Zelda was rescued from the Navajo reservation and brought to Underdog Rescue and Rehab. When this 8 month old, husky mix girl arrived at the Ranch, we knew she needed emergency medical attention immediately. X-rays showed that she had a broken hip and would require surgery and therapy to recover. 6 weeks post-surgery, she now enjoys life with her foster mom and furry sister and now new family! Zelda was in a foster home for 6 weeks. She loves to play with other dogs. Any time there is a hand nearby, Zelda will find a way to receive some love-check out her video meeting her new fur-ever family! She has a morning routine of going in and out of the dog door continuously and loves parading around the house with her stuffed chicken. Zelda is gaining confidence and is such a goofy gal. Underdog Rescue has saved over 954 dogs. We never turn a dog away because of their medical needs. We are a small rescue that relies on our supporters to help us through financially hard times. COVID, and multiple intense medical cases last month mean we need your support. Mill Creek Animal Hospital has been treating Zelda since she came into Underdog's care. Dr. Scott performed surgery on Zelda's hip to stabilize it. Now, the new bone isn't growing correctly and Dr. Scott will need to perform another corrective surgery. Zelda has been vaccinated, dewormed, and spayed. She is ready for her adopters home, but medical costs and treatments still remain. Zelda is a survivor. We don't know her past or how her hip was broken, but she has given us the chance to save her. She trusts us completely with her happiness and health and we cannot let her down. There are a variety of ways she could have broken her hip including at the hands of humans, but regardless, this girl has so much love to give and we will support her recovery until she is adopted.
