Nala

I got Nala the month after I graduated from college. I wasn’t sure what I was going to name her but when I brought her home I couldn’t stop looking at how big her paws were! Lion sized paws! And with that I decided Nala was her name, a fierce, strong willed lioness(but really I knew she was a dog...) We have been together for 6 years now, and she has helped me through so much of my depression that has taken over my life in the past 5 years. She gives me a reason to get up in the morning. She loves me even when I can’t love myself, and for that I owe her the world.
Lucy (Jade KKAR)
Lucy (Jade KKAR) is a 5-year-old Shepherd mix in North Myrtle Beach, SC, who needs $862 for heartworm treatment.

Jade (now known as Lucy) came to Kind Keeper Animal Rescue (KKAR) mid March 2019 from another county animal shelter. All of the paperwork stated that the animal had been an owner surrender and was 7 months old at the time of surrender to the other county. Her paperwork also stated that she was tested and was heart worm negative. When Jade (Lucy) arrived at KKAR her fur was very matted with feces and outdoor debris embedded into the mats. We groomed her as best we could at the shelter and then took her to a local groomer to make her presentable. Jade (Lucy) was adopted into a wonderful home within a week after her grooming transformation. When Lucy went to Myrtle Beach Animal Hospital to be spayed (per adoption requirements and paid by KKAR) she developed significant complications with bleeding and it was discovered that she was heart worm positive. Dr. Isabelle Ying also believed that rather than being 18 months old, that sweet Jade (Lucy) was closer to 5 years old. Needless to say, the new owner was devastated by the heart worm diagnosis and expensive treatment options.
Diamond
Diamond is a 6-year-old Bulldog Boxer mixed-breed in Fort Collins, CO, who needs $700 for malignant tumor removal.

Our family adopted Diamond when she was twelve weeks old. She is now six years old and we consider her a part of our family. She grew up with my two sons and my daughter and gives them kisses in the morning to wake them up. We also have a three legged cat named Babies who is Diamond's best friend. We often find them cuddled together. Diamond loves walking and swimming and catching flies. She always has a ball in her mouth until she drops it in front of whoever she wants to play with her. She's named Diamond for a diamond-shaped pattern in her fur, but she is also more precious to us and worth more than any diamond in the world.
Piper
Piper is a 13-year-old domestic short-hair cat in Essex, MD, who needs $622 for a tooth extraction.

My cat’s name is Piper. Her life prior to coming to live with me is largely unknown to me. I got Piper in 2009 from a friend who’d only had her for a few months. She had gotten Piper from a family that needed to rehome her because they had too many cats for them to manage apparently. I call Piper a rescue story because even though both homes she lived in before were healthy, caring environments I got the feeling that she’d lived in more than just the two previous homes. When I brought Piper home, I kissed her forehead, gave her skritches behind her ears and made her a promise that I would never give her away. She would never have to worry again because she found her furr-ever home. We’ve been best friends and cuddle buddies ever since. The vet estimates her age to be around 13-ish. However, Piper doesn’t seem to realize this and continues to have almost kitten like energy with her playful, active nature. Her name, Piper, was given to her by a previous owner and it suits her well, so I haven’t felt the need to change it. However, she has a few nicknames – Piperloo, Pipes, Fuzzy, Fuzzy Face, Fuzz Butt, Sporty Spice, Sweet Girl and for the rare times she’s naughty enough to need to be middle named – Piper Elizabeth. She has a kitty sister named Baby Bee who is the same age. I call my cats My Girls or My Fuzzy Kids. They have a typical female cat of non-related sister type relationship. There is some standoffishness, but they bond in many ways. For example, they cuddle on the bed together although not in a big pile of Cat, lol. There must remain some space between each other. But don’t let them fool you, I have seen them snuggled up together 😉 shhh … don’t let them know I told their secret to you. They are united in solidarity against the terror of The Vacuum and try to help soothe each other under my easy chair or in the bathtub. They also love to play with toys together in the tub and take turns drinking from the faucet. They love chasing the “red bug” aka the laser pointer, they love watching birds and squirrels together and of course the goings on of the neighborhood. Like most cats, Piper and Baby Bee are silent sentinels keeping watch.
Tiffany
Tiffany is a 6-year-old German Shepherd mix in La Center, WA, who needs $812 for rear leg amputation.

Tiffany arrived at Pacific Animal Society from Iran in March 2019. She had shot, brutally beaten with shovels and thrown into a well in Iran. With the help of a wonderful Iranian woman, she miraculously survived. She was given medical attention in Iran but arrived to us, in need of urgent care. Numerous people worked to get her to the United States so she could have a chance at a loving, forever home.
Rufus

Rufus is a one year old red heeler. He was a birthday present for my husband. My husband chose his name because he was called Rufus as a kid and has found memories growing up with his family. Rufus is a happy dog and gets along well with everyone. He did have four other dog siblings but sadly 3 of them died in the house fire.
Kailani
Kailani is a 1-year-old Mixed in Warwick, RI, who needs $2,000 for spinal surgery.

World, meet Kailani, a 9 Month old Thai Ridgeback Mix. This sweet girl came into our care a few months back- she was small, and on her very first night with us she started crying out in severe pain. We rushed her to Ocean State where they performed multiple tests. It was diagnosed that she is currently suffering from Spina Bifida (spinal cord defect) AND a condition called Dermoid Sinus. Dermoid sinus is a genetic skin condition in dogs, also known as pilonidal sinus. However, unlike pilonidal sinus in humans, the dermoid sinus in dogs is a neural tube defect. Dermoid sinus is rare in dogs and cats. It causes extreme pain, loss of mobility and general discomfort. She is unable to lift herself and move. Kailani is in a tremendous amount of pain. We are doing our best to keep her comfortable. She is in foster care where we can manage her pain while we save up the funds required to perform a surgery she needs to survive. Kailani is a fighter, and a love!
Lulu
Lulu is a 6-year-old Terrier/Poodle mix in Portland, OR, who needs 1,500 for treating chronic dental disease.

Lulu came to us on Labor Day weekend 2014, specifically August 30, 2014. Our beloved Dusty Springfield, a husky-shepherd mix whom we had for 13 years died just 6 weeks earlier, 2-weeks shy of her 15th birthday. Her loss was unbearable because she was our "daughter" our best friend, she was one of those dogs you'd trust with your life -- in fact her nickname was Trusty Dusty. We went through so many adventures together including moving cross-country from Detroit to Oregon in 2005. Dusty was my spirit animal -- I literally named myself after her! So when we said goodbye to her, a piece of us went with her. 6 weeks of inconsolable tears followed - our hearts hurt. Then, just before Labor Day weekend, I spotted a Facebook post from Underdog Railroad Rescue. They posted a small, blurry photo of what seemed like a medium-sized dog, whose head was hung low (as if she was sad), and URR was asking for an urgent foster for the upcoming Labor Day weekend and beyond... I suddenly realized that taking care of a dog while URR finds it a permanent home might be a good way to distract myself from the constant crying over Dusty's loss. So I inquired. Cut to Saturday, we picked her up and she was adorable, way tinier than expected but ridiculously cute and friendly. It only took a week for her real personality to come shining through. We fell in love -- and I realized it that I went from crying 20 times a day to laughing 50 times a day -- just from sheer cuteness. I guess I realized that when we signed up to foster, and then when we decided to adopt her, I thought I was saving Lulu -- but she is the one who saved me!
Gracie

Grace (19-006) is a 5 ½ month-old golden currently in GRRoW foster care and she has been diagnosed with a severe heart murmur. For such a little girl she already has big problems. And she needs our help. Grace has a congenital heart condition called Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA). The PDA is the failure of a large blood vessel to close just after birth. This vessel runs from the aorta to the pulmonary artery and should close shortly after birth, which then directs blood flow into the newly inflated lungs. If it does not close it causes the heart to enlarge, forcing it to work harder and fluid builds up in the lungs making it hard to breath (congestive heart failure). There is a cure, but it will require special non-invasive surgery as soon as possible! It's the only option for Grace to live a long and healthy life! Grace doesn't know how sick she is and she just wants to play and do puppy stuff. After she has this surgery, Grace will live a completely normal life. She can be the delightful bundle of energy she is without endangering her heart. Grace's medical expenses will total around $5,000. We hope you agree that it's a fair price to pay to save the life of this young rescue pup, who will bring much joy to her forever family.
