Rescued from the Roadside: Vera Needs Healing and a Second Chance

She didn’t cry for help. She didn’t run. She just sat there… on the side of a busy road, as if she had nowhere left to go. A few days ago, calls began coming in about a cat who wouldn’t move from the roadside. When a volunteer from Big Little Life Animal Rescue stopped to check, what they found was heartbreaking. Vera didn’t resist. She didn’t try to escape. She simply allowed herself to be picked up — as if she already knew this was her only chance. But once she was safe, the reality of her condition began to unfold. Vera walks unsteadily, her body not fully responding the way it should. She is missing part of her tongue — something that didn’t happen overnight, something she has been living with for a long time. Despite this, her long fur, though dirty, wasn’t completely matted… a quiet sign that someone once cared for her. Now at the clinic, Vera is facing even more serious concerns. She is vomiting, and when she arrived, her gums showed a yellow tint — a possible sign of liver dysfunction or severe infection. She is currently undergoing bloodwork, diagnostics, and receiving supportive care just to stabilize her fragile condition. We don’t yet know everything she’s fighting. But we know she has been failed before. And there’s something else Vera needs — something just as critical to her future. Vera is not yet spayed. Unspayed cats face enormous risks. They can develop life-threatening infections like pyometra, reproductive cancers, and are often driven to roam — putting them directly in harm’s way. Being unspayed may be part of how Vera ended up alone, vulnerable, and suffering on the side of a road. Spaying isn’t just a routine procedure — it’s protection. It prevents suffering before it starts. It gives cats like Vera a real chance at a stable, safe life. Before she can be spayed, Vera must first be stabilized. Her body needs to be strong enough for surgery. But that procedure is an essential part of her recovery — and part of ensuring she never ends up in a situation like this again. Despite supportive care, she continues to vomit bile, eat very little, and her mucous membranes still have a yellow tint — a sign that her body is under serious stress. What we first thought might be mostly due to her damaged mouth is now proving to be far more complicated. Her bloodwork shows concerning problems with her liver and gallbladder, and an ultrasound revealed free fluid in her abdomen. This has raised the frightening possibility of FIP (feline infectious peritonitis) — a dangerous disease that can quickly become fatal without intensive treatment. But at this time, Vera’s results do not give us a clear diagnosis, leaving us in a very difficult position: we know she is very sick, but we still need more testing to understand exactly what is happening. Vera now urgently needs repeat bloodwork, likely another ultrasound, continued supportive care, nausea treatment, and close daily monitoring. On top of her internal illness, Vera struggles every day because part of her tongue is missing. Eating is difficult, drooling is constant, and she cannot properly groom herself without assistance. She has likely been suffering silently for a long time. We are committed to getting Vera the answers and treatment she needs, but the veterinary costs continue to rise with every new diagnostic and every day of care. Please continue to help us fight for Vera. She is gentle, trusting, and depending on us not to give up on her now. 5/18/26 Update Because of your compassion and support, Vera’s story has taken a hopeful turn. When Vera was first found sitting helplessly beside a busy road, weak, jaundiced, vomiting, and unable to properly care for herself, we feared the worst. As her condition worsened and fluid was discovered in her abdomen, there was a very real concern that Vera could be suffering from FIP — a devastating diagnosis that would have meant an incredibly difficult and uncertain road ahead. Thankfully, after extensive monitoring, multiple rounds of bloodwork, biochemistry testing, ultrasounds, and supportive treatment, Vera’s doctors were able to rule out FIP. The relief we felt was enormous. Slowly, Vera began responding to treatment. Her vomiting has stopped, and while she is still healing, she is finally showing signs of strength again. Every small improvement feels huge for this gentle girl who has already endured so much. Life is still not easy for Vera. Because part of her tongue is missing, even basic daily tasks remain difficult. She eats slowly and carefully, struggling to grab food properly, and grooming herself is nearly impossible without help. Her little beard is often wet with drool, a constant reminder of the challenges she continues to face. But despite it all, Vera remains incredibly sweet, trusting, and gentle with the people caring for her. Once she is fully stable and strong enough, Vera will still need to be spayed — an important step toward protecting her long-term health and ensuring she never has to endure the dangers that vulnerable unspayed cats face on the streets. To everyone who donated, shared her story, and cared about this fragile little cat: thank you. Oh this little baby girl right here is Ohana. I’ve had her since she was just a couple months old. She came into my life when everything felt like it was falling apart. I was only 15 years old (now 29 )I always loved the movie stitch growing up, and the word Ohana has always met something very strong to me, so I knew it was the perfect name for her she’s always been such a Good girl So Loving I’ve never done something like this, but I am truly desperate and I’m reaching out for help. Ohana was recently diagnosed with a heart murmur that is slowly turning into heart failure. I have tried to keep it maintained for the last year but as of recently Ohanas cough has gotten worse. Possibly(pulmonary edema)I know he needs x-rays and bloodwork. But it’s so expensive reason I’m begging for help Me and Ohana have created this bond that is stronger than any one I’ve had in my life. She is such a beautiful soul full of life and love mostly love by just looking at her you can see the love in her eyes. She has always been by my side and has never let me down, which is why I wanna be by her side and never let her down. Molly Lost an Eye — Help Her Keep Her Future

At just 5 weeks old, Molly should be snuggled up with her siblings, learning how to play, and discovering the world around her. Instead, this tiny kitten was fighting through unimaginable pain. A concerned community member posted on social media after finding Molly with a severely infected and protruding eye. The condition was so advanced that her eye had become badly ulcerated and beyond saving. Desperate to help but unsure where to turn, they reached out online hoping someone could step in before it was too late. When our rescue saw the post, we knew we couldn’t look away. Molly was immediately brought into our care and rushed in forveterinary treatment. Due to the severity of the damage and infection, she needed an urgent enucleation surgery to remove the eye and relieve her pain. Without surgery, the infection could have spread and become life-threatening for such a tiny kitten. Despite everything she has endured, Molly is incredibly sweet and resilient. Even after surgery, she leans into affection, purrs for comfort, and is already beginning to show us her playful spirit. She may have lost an eye, but she has not lost her will to live or her ability to trust. Molly still needs continued veterinary care, medications, follow-up visits, and support as she heals and grows stronger. Meet Kona — a devoted, gentle soul who has spent the last 13 years by his family’s side. Now at 15 years old, this sweet Pitbull mix should be enjoying his golden years in comfort. Instead, he’s in pain—and he needs our help. Kona is currently battling severe double ear infections, a painful abscess in his gum, and concerning facial swelling that may require further diagnostics. His discomfort is constant—head shaking, scratching, and the deep, lingering pain of infection that won’t resolve without medical care. His veterinary team has recommended urgent treatment, including a cytology and deep ear cleaning to identify and treat the infection at its source. Because of the severity, Kona will likely need sedation to safely and thoroughly clean his ears and relieve the pressure and pain. At the same time, his dental abscess must be addressed through a full oral exam, possible drainage, and potentially even a biopsy to rule out more serious conditions. These are not optional procedures—they are critical to easing Kona’s suffering and preventing his condition from worsening. Kona’s family is doing everything they can, but they’re facing significant financial hardship. After a recent medical diagnosis left his dad unable to work and a job loss impacted their household, affording this urgent care has become overwhelming. His veterinary team will simply continue to monitor it during future checkups to make sure he stays healthy and comfortable. Even better, Tom has been feeling noticeably better since his visit. His dandruff and flaky skin are already improving, and he seems much more comfortable. After spending so many years surviving outdoors, it means the world to see this sweet senior finally getting the care and attention he deserves. Nova came into my life in December 2025 from the Las Vegas Animal Shelter, a quiet, gentle soul who somehow felt like home from the very first moment. They said she needed me, but I know the truth is I needed her more. Her name came to me that first night—she curled up beside me, looked up with those soft, knowing eyes, and it felt like a light had sparked in the dark. A nova, sudden, bright While we were homeless in Nevada, Nova and my husband were hit by a car. She suffered severe injuries to her foot, and despite ongoing care since returning to Tennessee, it hasn’t healed. Veterinarians now say the damage is too extensive, and her foot will need to be amputated to relieve her pain and help her heal. The doctors at All Tails clinic in Jonesboro have done a great job Nova has this gentle way of knowing when someone needs her—she’ll quietly press against you, like she’s holding you together. She follows us everywhere, always close, always watching. With my husband, she’s playful and protective; with me, she’s my calm in the chaos—my heart on four paws. Since returning to TN, Nova’s injured foot hasn’t healed and now must be amputated at All Tails Vet Clinic. At an age when she should be learning to wobble, discovering her tiny purr, and curling up safely in warm blankets, this little kitten was instead facing severe pain and an uncertain future. Lucie came into the care of Maybel’s Legacy with a badly swollen and infected eye that quickly worsened and ruptured. She was clearly uncomfortable and needed immediate veterinary intervention to relieve her pain and give her a chance at a healthy life. After an emergency evaluation, veterinarians determined that the kindest and safest option was an urgent eye removal surgery (enucleation), followed by specialized pain management and supportive care. Though incredibly small and fragile, Lucie showed remarkable strength throughout the process. At just a few ounces, Lucie cannot advocate for herself, but Maybel’s Legacy is committed to making sure she receives the care, comfort, and safety every kitten deserves. Tiny Theodore Should Have Been Safe in Someone’s Arms — Not Fighting for His Life in a Hospital Cage

Theodore is just a baby. A tiny kitten who should be learning how to pounce, curling up in warm blankets, and falling asleep to the sound of a gentle heartbeat. Instead, Theodore was found alone on the streets — abandoned, terrified, and being tormented by children while he lay too weak to defend himself. When someone witnessed what was happening, they immediately reached out to our rescue in desperation. We rushed Theodore straight to the emergency veterinary hospital. What veterinarians found was devastating. This fragile little kitten is suffering from severe blunt force trauma, and based on the extent of his injuries, the medical team believes Theodore was struck in the head. The trauma has left his tiny body in critical condition. When Theodore arrived, his temperature was dangerously low — a life-threatening sign that his body was beginning to shut down. He was cold, limp, and barely responsive. Every minute mattered. Right now, Theodore is hospitalized in intensive care where the veterinary team is working tirelessly to stabilize him, raise his body temperature, manage his pain, and monitor for neurological damage caused by the head trauma. Because he is so small, Theodore has almost no reserve to fight this on his own. Kittens this young can decline in an instant. But despite everything this baby has endured — abandonment, cruelty, fear, and unimaginable pain — Theodore is still here. Still fighting. Still trying. Our rescue could not turn away from this suffering little soul, but emergency hospitalization and round-the-clock care come at a significant cost. We are asking our village to step in for Theodore. He has already known the worst of humanity. Please help us show him the best. Help Pumpkin’s Rescue Club Reach the Cats No One Else Can

Some of the cats we are called to help are easy to see— the tiny kittens crying under porches, the friendly abandoned house cats left behind to fend for themselves, the injured strays limping through parking lots. But so many others stay just out of reach. Terrified feral mothers continue having litter after litter in unsafe colonies. Sick cats disappear into bushes before treatment can be given. Injured community cats suffer silently because there is no way to safely get them into care. And for rescuers, one heartbreaking truth remains: we cannot help the cats we cannot catch. At Pumpkin’s Rescue Club, humane trapping is where every rescue story begins. Before there can be full bellies, soft beds, antibiotics, surgeries, vaccines, foster homes, or adoptions… there has to be a safe way to bring these vulnerable cats out of danger and into loving hands. Right now, we urgently need to purchase: \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\- 3 humane cat traps - 1 transfer cage for safe movement and transport These are not just pieces of equipment. They are lifelines. A trap is what allows us to rescue the starving kitten who won’t come close enough to touch. A trap is what allows us to catch the pregnant mom before she gives birth to yet another litter outdoors. A trap is what allows us to bring in the cat suffering from wounds, infection, or respiratory illness before it’s too late. And a transfer cage allows frightened feral cats to be moved safely from trap to vehicle, to veterinary clinic, to surgery, and then into recovery—without causing further trauma or risking injury. Without enough trapping equipment, devastating choices have to be made: which urgent call gets answered first, which colony has to wait, which cat remains outside another night because every trap is already in use. Those delays can mean more kittens born into suffering. More injuries left untreated. More cats simply disappearing before help arrives. This is the invisible side of rescue that few people see: sometimes the difference between life and death is something as simple as having an open trap available when the phone rings. Pumpkin’s Rescue Club is working tirelessly to reduce suffering through TNVR, rescue abandoned and injured cats, and expand our ability to say “yes” when help is needed. But we cannot do that empty-handed. These supplies will not help just one cat. They will help every cat who comes after: every frightened feral mom, every injured stray, every sick colony cat, every kitten born outside with no one else looking for them.
