Left on a Sidewalk in the Cold: Sash Needs Our Help

Sash is only about 4 months old — but she has already experienced a level of abandonment no puppy should ever know. She was found left behind on a random sidewalk, sealed inside a carrier, in the freezing cold. Our team at D&A Animal Rescue happened to be driving by and noticed the carrier. Something told them to stop and check — and inside, they found Sash, shaking, scared, and alone. If no one had stopped, we can’t imagine what could have happened to her. Despite everything, Sash is incredibly sweet and resilient. She’s a young pup, weighing around 20 pounds, with her whole life still ahead of her. Now that she’s safe, we want to make sure she gets the healthy start she deserves. Sash needs all of the basic preventative care required before she can be adopted, including, spay surgery, a microchip, a full series of puppy vaccines, and preventative medications for fleas, ticks, and heartworms As a small rescue, these essential medical costs add up quickly — especially when emergencies like Sash’s rescue happen without warning. I just picked up this sweet girl from the municipal shelter, and my heart is breaking. D&A Animal Rescue is completely full—truly, we had no space left. But how could we say no to Rosita? Rosita’s story is one of resilience, heartbreak, and hope. She was rescued once before from a terrible situation and finally found safety and love with a young woman who adored her. For the first time, Rosita had a home, a bed, a routine, a person. But everything changed overnight. Rosita’s owner was taken into ICE custody, and this gentle girl was suddenly left behind with no one to protect her. When her owner managed to call me from jail, her voice was shaking as she begged: “Please… please find Rosita a wonderful home. I only trust you.” How could we walk away after that? Rosita didn’t understand why she was back in a kennel. She just pressed her face against us, desperate for comfort, trembling with confusion and grief. She had already lost so much—and we refused to let her lose hope, too. We brought her into rescue, even though we are at capacity, and immediately began her medical evaluation. That’s when we learned she is heartworm positive and will need a full heartworm treatment plan to save her life. It’s a long, costly process—but Rosita deserves every chance to heal and find the stable, loving home her owner desperately wanted for her. Despite everything, Rosita is pure sweetness—gentle, affectionate, and trusting. All she wants is a person to love again. Now, she needs you. Jacob’s story begins in a parking lot—alone, confused, and tied to a pole with no way to move, no food, no water, and no one coming back for him. When our D&A Animal Rescue team arrived, we expected fear or defensiveness. Instead, Jacob did something that broke our hearts: he rolled onto his back and showed us his belly. A silent plea. “Please don’t leave me.” Jacob is just a baby—only about a year and a half old—with the gentlest soul. Despite being abandoned, he greeted us with pure trust, love, and gratitude. We knew instantly that we couldn’t walk away. He deserved safety. He deserved care. He deserved a chance. We brought Jacob straight to the vet, where he received the exams and treatment he had long been denied. He’s now neutered, vaccinated, and finally getting the medical care he needs. Jacob is also dealing with a painful skin rash, likely caused by neglect, and requires special medication and a prescription diet to help him heal. Through it all, Jacob remains sweet, affectionate, and endlessly hopeful—leaning into every hug, wagging at every kind word, and showing everyone he meets that his heart is still open. Chiquita was surrendered by her owner in heartbreaking condition. From the moment she arrived, it was clear she was in pain and had been suffering for quite some time. Her anus was severely swollen, making it difficult for her to even sit or move comfortably. On top of that, her teeth were in terrible shape—likely causing her constant discomfort with every bite and every breath. D&A Animal Rescue rushed her to the vet, where the initial exam raised even more concern. The vet suspects that Chiquita may be suffering from TVT (transmissible venereal tumor)—a form of cancer. A specialist appointment is scheduled for next week, but in the meantime, her condition remains fragile and painful. Henry's story began with hardship. Found emaciated and struggling to survive, he was rescued by D&A Animal Rescue and brought into safety. But his struggles didn't end there. Henry tested positive for heartworm. Yet, with time, treatment, and the compassion of those around him, Henry overcame the heartworm battle and regained his strength. Despite for his readiness for a fresh start, he waited year after year for a family of his own. But for reasons unknown, no one chose him. Instead, he became family to D&A - a loving, loyal, and enduring presence. Recently, the D&A team noticed that Henry was having some health issues. They took him to the vet who found six masses and recommended removal to prevent them from growing. Henry underwent surgery and the masses were successfully removed. However, the diagnostics revealed some concerns: Henry's bloodwork showed an elevated MPV (mean platelet volume), which is something that will need ongoing monitoring to ensure his continued well-being. Late one night, the D&A Team was driving home when their headlights illuminated a heartbreaking sight—a frightened dog frozen in the middle of a busy road. Cars raced past her, missing her by inches, as she stood trembling and unsure where to turn. Without hesitation, the team pulled over, carefully approached her, and after several minutes filled with patience and gentle reassurance, they were able to scoop her up and bring her to safety. That moment changed everything. They named her Vicky - a survivor that instantly captured their hearts. Vicky is now safe, but her journey is far from over. She arrived at the rescue covered in fleas, with a large, unexplained scar along her side. It's also unclear whether she’s pregnant or has recently given birth. Her eyes tell a story of hardship, yet she shows a spirit full of quiet strength. Despite the trauma she’s endured, Vicky has already begun to trust—and she is ready to heal. Update 5/25/25: Today has been an incredibly challenging day for D&A Animal Rescue and their sweet girl, Vicky. The organization had taken Vicky to the vet for her scheduled spay surgery, hoping it would be the first step toward a healthier future for her. However, during the procedure, the veterinarian discovered a mass on her leg that needs to be removed. This unforeseen issue has added significant unexpected costs to Vicky’s medical care. Vicky has clearly had a difficult past. The scars on her leg and the marks on her face suggest she may have been hit by a car. Despite these physical reminders of her tough start in life, Vicky’s spirit remains strong and unbroken. Unfortunately, she also tested positive for heartworms and hookworms, which makes her treatment even more urgent. The rescue initially budgeted $375 for Vicky's spay, but with the additional costs of the leg surgery and the heartworm treatment, her bill has skyrocketed to $859—and this doesn’t even include the heartworm injection, which is expected to cost around $575. The team at D&A Animal Rescue is doing everything possible to provide the care she needs, but these unforeseen medical expenses have placed a heavy burden on their budget. Despite these challenges, the organization remains committed to helping Vicky heal. She is a sweet, loving dog who deserves a future filled with joy and care. D&A traveled miles and miles to find their baby, and after six long, heartbreaking days, they finally managed to trap her. She’s home now, but the path to regain her trust and help her heal—physically and emotionally—has just begun. When D&A Animal Rescue brought her back to Texas, the sight of her was heartbreaking. Rosie was anemic, dehydrated, and covered in ticks. But even worse, her spirit was broken. Every sound, every movement—she cowers in fear. She’s terrified, and it’s clear that this journey has left deep emotional scars. It’s going to take time, patience, and a lot of love to help her heal. Despite being abandoned and left to fend for himself, Nugget is such a loving, sweet dog. His painful condition doesn't stop him from wanting to meet new people and lick their face. Nugget has a long, arduous road ahead of him. It will take months for his skin to recover from the severe infection and he immediately needs to gain weight and rehydrate. Once his skin and ear infections start to heal, he will then need to undergo heartworm treatment. It will not be easy, but D&A Animal Rescue is determined to provide Nugget with all the care he needs to make a fully recovery and live a happy, healthy life.
