Bambi Survived a Hit and Run—Help Him Get the Care He Needs

WE COULDN’T LOSE ANOTHER ONE. 💔 Meet Bambi. Bambi is only 5 months old. He should be spending his days running, playing, getting into puppy mischief and learning what it means to be somebody’s best friend. Instead, we received a call that a puppy was lying in the middle of the road on blazing hot asphalt, unable to get up. At the time, we didn't know what had happened to him. We just knew there was a baby in the road who needed help. Bambi was picked up and rushed to the veterinary clinic, where we learned the heartbreaking truth: he had been hit by a car. His injuries were extensive. Bambi's femur was broken, and his hip was so badly damaged that it had to be removed. His other leg was also severely bruised and infected, leaving this little puppy with significant injuries to both sides of his body. There wasn't time to wait. Bambi needed two major surgeries—and he has now undergone both of them. During his second surgery, the damage to his hip was so severe that the veterinary team had to remove it. He remained hospitalized for several days afterward so his medical team could closely monitor him and keep his pain under control. He will then continue his recovery in a foster home with a dedicated medical foster who has successfully rehabilitated dogs with serious injuries in the past. Although the surgeries are behind him, Bambi still has a very long road ahead. He will need continued medical care and months of ongoing therapy and rehabilitation to regain his strength and mobility and, hopefully, get back to doing all the things a 5-month-old puppy should be doing. And we said yes to all of it. The truth is, some rescues faced with injuries this extensive, a recovery this long and treatment this costly may have made a different decision. But there was something about this baby. And there was something else weighing incredibly heavily on our hearts that day. We had already been forced to say goodbye to two dogs that very same day because of devastating injuries they suffered after being hit by vehicles. Their injuries were too severe, and the only kindness we had left to give them was a peaceful goodbye. Then came Bambi. Another dog hit by a car. Another broken little body. Another life hanging in the balance. But this time, there was hope. Bambi could be saved. After so much heartbreak in a single day, we desperately needed something good to come from it. We needed to be able to say yes to this one. So we did. We named him Bambi because with those big, beautiful ears and sweet face, he looks a little like a baby deer. He's a 5-month-old Black Mouth Cur who has somehow remained incredibly sweet despite everything that has happened to him. Now we're asking for your help. We didn't wait until the money was raised to save Bambi. We couldn't. He needed us right then. We made the commitment to give this baby his chance, knowing we would have to find a way to cover the cost afterward. Bambi's first surgery alone cost $1,600, and we are still waiting to receive the bill for his second surgery. On top of those surgical costs are his hospitalization, medications, follow-up veterinary care and the months of therapy and rehabilitation he will need as he heals. For a small rescue, expenses like these are significant. But when a life can be saved, we want to be able to say yes. Now we desperately need our community to help us carry the financial part of that yes. No donation is too small. $5, $10, $20 — when enough people come together, those gifts become surgery. They become another night of hospital care. They become medication and rehabilitation. They become a second chance. We couldn't save the other two that day. But we could save Bambi. And we did. Ave Maria Lost Her Puppies And Is Now Fighting For Her Life

Ave Maria has already endured more heartbreak than any dog should have to experience. Now, after finally being given a second chance, she has found herself fighting for her life. This sweet 5-year-old mama arrived at a large county shelter in Houston with her newborn puppies, who were only a few days old. Tragically, one by one, all of Ave Maria’s babies passed away in the shelter. Newborn puppies have extremely vulnerable immune systems, leaving them especially susceptible to illness and infection. Sadly, this is a reality many young puppies face in large, overcrowded county shelters, where constant exposure to disease can be devastating for babies whose immune systems have barely had a chance to develop. Ave Maria was left without a single one of her babies. She was sad and withdrawn, barely moving and not even interested in treats. After losing her entire litter, Ave Maria faced yet another devastating blow: she was placed on the shelter’s euthanasia list. Thankfully, Strong Paws Rescue stepped in and saved her. Once she was out of the shelter, Ave Maria began showing everyone the dog hiding beneath all that sadness. She became happier and more energetic, revealing herself to be an incredibly gentle, affectionate girl. After everything she had endured, it finally seemed like the worst was behind her. Then, during what should have been a routine spay surgery, something went terribly wrong. Ave Maria experienced significantly more bleeding than expected. Later that evening, her condition deteriorated. She struggled to stand, her gums became pale, and she was rushed for emergency veterinary care. Her red blood cell levels continued to fall—from 34% to 28%, and then to just 23%. Veterinarians began considering a blood transfusion and emergency surgery to locate the source of the bleeding. There was a very real possibility that immediate intervention would be necessary to save her life. Thankfully, Ave Maria’s body began to fight back. She was able to form a clot, the bleeding appeared to stop, and the blood began to be reabsorbed. Once she was stable enough, she was transferred for continued overnight hospitalization and close monitoring. After losing every one of her newborn babies, surviving the euthanasia list, and now making it through a frightening medical crisis, Ave Maria is still here—and she is still fighting. Her emergency care has also created a significant and unexpected expense for Strong Paws Rescue. Her initial emergency treatment totaled approximately $2,000, with another $1,000 estimated for overnight hospitalization and monitoring. Strong Paws Rescue didn’t hesitate when Ave Maria needed them. Now, they need our help covering the lifesaving veterinary care that gave this deserving mama another chance. Ave Maria has already experienced enough loss for a lifetime. Now it’s her turn to experience safety, love, and the future she fought so hard to have.

Help Buster Heal After Unthinkable Abuse

Buster’s story began with a desperate plea for help from the streets of Houston. This sweet boy was living as a stray when people in his neighborhood reportedly began encouraging their dogs to attack him. Even children were seen hitting him with sticks. By the time a kind neighbor stepped in to protect him, Buster was battered and hurting, with a deep wound above his eye, a swollen neck, and painful injuries and spray paint covering his body. Thankfully, that neighbor refused to look away. They got Buster somewhere safe and began desperately reaching out for someone who could help him. That plea eventually reached Sunnyside Street Dogs, and Buster’s life changed forever. Despite everything humans had put him through, Buster remained incredibly sweet and loving. Once he realized he was finally safe, his gentle personality began to shine through. Sunnyside Street Dogs made sure he received the veterinary care, vaccinations, and support he desperately needed while his wounds—and his heart—were given time to heal. Rescuing dogs from abuse like Buster comes at a cost. His veterinary treatment, vaccinations, neuter surgery, and continued care are expenses Sunnyside Street Dogs takes on so dogs in desperate situations don’t have to be left behind. Annie Stayed Until the End. Now It’s Our Turn to Stay With Her

When Animal Control was called to a rural Kentucky home, they found Annie alone with her owner, who had passed away. We may never know how long this senior girl had been alone, how long she had gone without enough food, or how long her body had been struggling. But one thing is certain: Annie stayed. She remained by the person she loved until there was no one left to care for her. Now, One By One Animal Rescue is staying with Annie. When she arrived at the Carter County Animal Shelter, Annie was severely emaciated and in heartbreaking condition. Most of her fur was gone, her skin was thick, raw, inflamed and painful, and she was covered in fleas and ticks. Her nails were severely overgrown, and her fragile body showed just how long she had gone without proper care. When we saw Annie's condition, we rushed her to the emergency hospital, where veterinarians discovered that she is anemic and Lyme positive. She is receiving IV fluids, supplements, antibiotics for her painful skin and Lyme disease, and constant monitoring to determine whether she will need a blood transfusion. Because Annie has been so severely malnourished, even feeding her requires extreme caution. Her veterinarians have carefully calculated her nutritional needs, and she is being given tiny amounts of food every two hours to prevent potentially fatal refeeding syndrome. Her little body must be nourished slowly and carefully as she begins rebuilding the strength she has lost. Her skin has also been incredibly painful. Annie was so inflamed and uncomfortable that she was biting at herself and crying out. Her vet team approved a Cytopoint injection to help give her some much-needed relief. For now, Annie will remain hospitalized under close observation. Her veterinary team is continuing fluids, medications, nutritional support and frequent bloodwork while watching her anemia and overall condition. We don't know what the coming days will bring. We don't know how long Annie's recovery will take or what additional treatment she may need. But we do know this: Annie has been alone long enough. She will not be alone anymore. After giving her loyalty to her person until the very end, Annie now has people fighting for her. She deserves the chance to know what it feels like to be comfortable, nourished, cared for and loved. Helga and her brother Floki came to me during an out of state visit to friends and family after the loss of my long time friend of over 30yrs. The pups were living in less than ideal situation and had lost their mom at approx 4 wks old. They cried for each other whenever they were out of each other’s sight, so when asked if I would like to take them there was no option but to take them both. I don’t know exactly how it happened but I knew I needed to take her to a vet asap. I took her to Olympia Pet Emergency Hospital and was not given good news. We could try the meds to stop infection and reduce swelling and pain but there were no guarantees that she would have any sight, but that the best thing for her would be to remove the eye at a cost of at least $3500 that I did not have. Although it’s only been a few days and seems the swelling is going down some, This course of treatment may just be a short delay to her needing Enucleation surgery, it could get worse. To the point of either surgery or being euthanized. I can’t believe how short of a time I have become so attached to them. And Floki hates to be away from his sister and is so bonded. I’m dying inside for them. This definitely was not expected. I was only approved for $1200 in CareCredit and almost half of that was used for the emergency appointment. Helga should not lose her life over this or suffer any longer than necessary. Please Help if you can.

Ursula is a 11 year old Mix-Breed in Everett, WA, who needs $5,000 for X-Ray, Ultrasound, Hydration and Possible Surgery.

Ursula is a rescue and emotional support pet to Jay, who is a veteran. She has been by his side when he lost family members close to him. Together with a pet sister Mallory, they bring him comfort. Several weeks ago, Ursula began spitting up, stopped drinking water, didn't eat much and began loosing weight. We took her to the vet and had blood test done which showed inflammation and elevated levels on several tests. The vet has also stated that they feel a mass which could be an enlarged lymph nod or a tumor. To get more information, the vet would like to do an X-ray and an ultrasound. Jay calls Ursula a spicy kitty as she has a mind of her own. She loves to explore her surrounding and bask in the sun. She has a pet sister Mallory. I am helping Jay with the vet bills as Jay lives on fixed income. We were unable to secure pet insurance in time. Already paid over $700 to the vet. Besides the X-ray and ultrasound, Ursula needs ongoing hydration treatment to get her back on track.

Now, she is safe in rescue and enjoying the simple things she loves most—cozy beds, quiet companionship, and plenty of naps. But Lady Bug has some medical needs that require ongoing care. She has an enlarged heart that is pressing on her trachea, causing a persistent cough, as well as a lesion inside her eyelid. Thankfully, her conditions can be managed with daily medication, allowing Lady Bug to remain comfortable and enjoy her best life. Her current medical expenses include her medications, an IDEXX senior profile, and an X-ray, totaling $570. Born Blind, Crow Is Now Facing Seizures

La Mesa, CA • The Animal Pad

At just 2.5 years old, Crow has been navigating the world a little differently his entire life. This sweet Standard Poodle was born blind and came to The Animal Pad from a breeder who was unable to sell him or his sister because they were both born without their sight. Despite being blind, Crow is an incredibly cuddly, sweet and loving dog. He does great with other dogs and kids and loves being close to the people around him. Some of his favorite things are playing with squeaky toys, wrestling with other dogs, cuddling and, of course, eating. Since coming into the care of The Animal Pad, Crow has been working on the skills that will help him navigate life with more confidence. He is learning bathroom, crate and leash training and is even working with a blind dog specialist to help him make the most of his other senses. Crow’s blindness was evaluated by a neurologist and determined to be congenital, meaning it is a condition he was born with. More recently, however, Crow has developed another concerning medical issue. Crow has unfortunately begun suffering from seizures. He was prescribed anti-seizure medication to help manage them, but has since experienced behavioral changes following the medication. His medical needs now require continued attention as his care team works to manage his seizures and determine the best path forward for him. Being blind has never stopped Crow from enjoying his life, playing with other dogs or soaking up affection from the people around him. Now he needs help as he faces this new medical challenge. The Animal Pad is committed to giving Crow the specialized care and support he needs. Between his neurological needs, seizure management, medication and the additional support that comes with caring for a blind dog, Crow’s journey requires resources beyond routine veterinary care.
