Momo was hiding in an abandoned bathroom, frightened, injured, and trying to survive on his own. When the Stray Animal Foundation of India found him, they could see a large wound around his eye and face, but Momo was terrified of being approached. Catching him wasn’t easy, but the team refused to leave him behind. Eventually, they were able to safely bring him back to the shelter. Only then did they discover just how severe his injuries were. Momo had a deep wound across his face that was infested with thousands of maggots. What had appeared concerning from a distance was far worse up close, and he desperately needed medical attention. For a street dog, an untreated wound like Momo’s can quickly become life-threatening. Without rescue, he would have been left to endure the pain and worsening damage alone. Now, Momo is finally safe and can begin the difficult process of healing. The Stray Animal Foundation of India is committed to giving him the treatment, wound care, and support he needs, but cases this severe require time and resources. Owl Is Fighting to Survive After Unthinkable Cruelty

What happened to Owl was not simple neglect. It was prolonged, heartbreaking cruelty. Someone appears to have watched this beautiful dog slowly starve until she became so weak that she could no longer stand. Her nails grew horrifically long and curled beneath her paws. Sores developed across her skeletal body. Her tail became necrotic. And when she was finally abandoned, she was simply dumped on a Brooklyn sidewalk and left there. Owl was found near Owl’s Head Park unable to walk and barely strong enough to survive. Estimated to be just 5–7 years old, Owl may have spent years—possibly half of her life—with the person who allowed this to happen to her. Her condition tells the devastating story of prolonged starvation and suffering. When she arrived at NYC Second Chance Rescue, Owl was severely emaciated, extremely weak, and unable to stand. Her body was covered in pressure sores over the areas where bone protruded beneath her skin. Her nails were so severely overgrown and curled that they showed just how long she had been neglected. Her tail tip has become necrotic and ulcerated, and she may require surgery or even amputation. Bloodwork revealed significantly elevated liver enzymes, showing just how severely her body has been affected by prolonged starvation. Owl also has a heart murmur and severe dental disease, adding even more challenges to an already critical situation. Right now, Owl requires around-the-clock medical care and extremely close monitoring for refeeding syndrome. After prolonged starvation, simply giving a dog food again can be dangerous if it is not done carefully. Her veterinary team must slowly and cautiously nourish her while watching for potentially life-threatening complications. There are no guarantees that Owl will make it. If she does survive this critical period, she is facing weeks of hospitalization, intensive treatment, rehabilitation, and a long road toward rebuilding her strength. But for the first time in what may have been years, Owl has people fighting for her. And the rescue is also fighting for justice. They are seeking surveillance footage from cameras near Owl’s Head Park and the area where she was abandoned, hoping to identify the person responsible for what was done to her and hold them accountable. Owl never deserved this. She deserved food. She deserved medical care. She deserved a safe place to sleep. She deserved someone to protect her. Instead, she was allowed to waste away until she could barely stand—and then she was discarded. We refuse to let that be the end of her story. Her road to recovery will be long, expensive, and uncertain, but the rescue is determined to do everything possible to get Owl out of the woods and give her the life she should have had all along. When Vini arrived in the care of Baw Baw Animal Welfare, the damage to his face was devastating. He had lost nearly half of his upper jawbone, leaving his nasal cavity exposed. The open wound had also become infested with maggots. Beyond the injuries that could be seen, Vini was deeply unwell. He was withdrawn and defeated, and blood tests revealed a severe infection along with significant anemia. Right now, surgery isn’t even the first step. Vini’s body needs to become strong enough to handle it. His veterinary team has begun treatment to control the infection, carefully manage and clean his extensive wound, and improve his dangerously low red blood cell levels. Once Vini is stable and healthy enough, the hope is to move forward with reconstructive surgery to repair as much of the damage as possible. There is a long road between where Vini is today and the life Baw Baw desperately wants for him. His recovery will require ongoing veterinary care, medications, wound treatment, monitoring, and ultimately a major operation. Vini has already endured more than any dog should. His Neck Was Cut & His Eyes Popped From His Head After Crane Operator Runs Him Over

GRAPHIC CASE: Liam was run over by a crane, and the person who hit him just...left. Gone. They left him there with his eyes severely injured and bulging from the trauma, a deep laceration across his neck, and blood coming from a body that had already been through more than any dog should survive. They did not stop. They did not get him help. They left him to die and bleed out like his life meant nothing. Thankfully, some locals saw him and did what the person who hit him should have done. They stepped in. They got Liam off the street. They brought him to us so he could finally receive the emergency care he desperately needed. And now we are fighting for him. Right now, Liam is weak and in terrible pain. His eye injuries are severe, and his neck wound is deep. We do not know yet exactly what his full recovery will look like, but the doctors believe he has a chance, and that is all we needed to hear. If Liam has a chance, we are going to take it. But we need help. He needs urgent treatment for his eyes, wound care for the neck laceration, pain medication, antibiotics, monitoring, possible surgery, hospitalization, diagnostics, and continued supportive care while his body tries to survive what happened to him. Hachi Was Hit and Left Bleeding, Alone and Hopeless

Hachi was found lying outside Marriott Hotel, bleeding helplessly on the road after a brutal road accident. He could not understand what had happened to him. He could not understand the speed, the impact, or why his body was suddenly in so much pain. All he knew was fear, blood, and the street beneath him while he waited for someone to notice that he was still alive. Thankfully, someone did though. On Friday, our helpline received the call about Hachi, but before we could even reach him, a kind soul had already stepped in. They did not look away. They did not leave him there to bleed. They took him to a nearby vet for basic treatment while waiting for us to arrive, and that small act of kindness may be the reason Hachi is still here today. When we reached him, our hearts broke. Hachi was badly injured and bleeding from his forehead, ears, and arm. The amount of blood he had lost was frightening. He was weak, scared, and in pain, and without timely help, we could have lost this innocent boy right there on the streets. That is how close it was. Now Hachi is safe, but he is not okay yet. His body is hurting, and his mind is still carrying the trauma of what happened. He needs treatment, wound care, pain medication, antibiotics, monitoring, follow-up care, and time to heal from an accident that could have ended his life. The streets are the only home so many animals know, but they do not understand roads. They do not understand speed. Beaten, Burned and Left to Suffer: Please Help Asher

Asher came to us from Phagwara, over two hours away, after a woman learned that the local animal organization was unwilling to keep him because of the severity of his condition. Asher had been brutally beaten by human hands. His injuries were left untreated, and maggots began consuming the wounded tissue around his face. As Asher wandered the streets in this condition, people didn't want him near them. His face was rotting. His eye was destroyed. He was weak, sick, and walking around in a body that was begging for help. The local woman started asking nearby shopkeepers if anyone knew anything about him. Their response? “We don’t want that dog, he’s disgusting.” That is what they saw when they looked at Asher. Not a suffering dog. Not a life in pain. Not someone who needed help. They saw a sick, injured animal and decided he was dirty, unwanted, and not worth kindness. And then she found out one of them had thrown hot water on him to keep him away. That part makes us sick. Asher was not disgusting. He was not dirty in the way they wanted to believe. He was sick. He was injured. He was being eaten alive by infection and maggots, and instead of helping him, people judged him, chased him away, and hurt him more. Can you imagine being in that much pain and still being treated like you are the problem? His eye is gone now, from what we can tell. Disease, rotting skin, and maggots have destroyed it. It is hard to look at, but it must have been even harder to live with. Every hour he spent like this mattered. Every step he took on those streets, every time he lowered his head, every time someone pushed him away, he was carrying pain no animal should ever be forced to carry. Thankfully, the woman who found him did not look away. Our team set out immediately and got him. By the time Asher reached us, he was in miserable shape. Weak, exhausted, and still hanging on, even after everything his body had endured. He is now hospitalized and receiving immediate supportive care while we try to stabilize him and begin treating the damage. This is urgent. Asher needs hospitalization, pain control, antibiotics, wound cleaning, maggot removal, fluids, bloodwork, supportive care, possible surgery or eye removal if needed, and constant monitoring. We do not yet know the full extent of what his body is fighting, but we know he cannot survive this without serious medical care. Please donate for Asher right now. Bambi Survived a Hit and Run—Help Him Get the Care He Needs

WE COULDN’T LOSE ANOTHER ONE. 💔 Meet Bambi. Bambi is only 5 months old. He should be spending his days running, playing, getting into puppy mischief and learning what it means to be somebody’s best friend. Instead, we received a call that a puppy was lying in the middle of the road on blazing hot asphalt, unable to get up. At the time, we didn't know what had happened to him. We just knew there was a baby in the road who needed help. Bambi was picked up and rushed to the veterinary clinic, where we learned the heartbreaking truth: he had been hit by a car. His injuries were extensive. Bambi's femur was broken, and his hip was so badly damaged that it had to be removed. His other leg was also severely bruised and infected, leaving this little puppy with significant injuries to both sides of his body. There wasn't time to wait. Bambi needed two major surgeries—and he has now undergone both of them. During his second surgery, the damage to his hip was so severe that the veterinary team had to remove it. He remained hospitalized for several days afterward so his medical team could closely monitor him and keep his pain under control. He will then continue his recovery in a foster home with a dedicated medical foster who has successfully rehabilitated dogs with serious injuries in the past. Although the surgeries are behind him, Bambi still has a very long road ahead. He will need continued medical care and months of ongoing therapy and rehabilitation to regain his strength and mobility and, hopefully, get back to doing all the things a 5-month-old puppy should be doing. And we said yes to all of it. The truth is, some rescues faced with injuries this extensive, a recovery this long and treatment this costly may have made a different decision. But there was something about this baby. And there was something else weighing incredibly heavily on our hearts that day. We had already been forced to say goodbye to two dogs that very same day because of devastating injuries they suffered after being hit by vehicles. Their injuries were too severe, and the only kindness we had left to give them was a peaceful goodbye. Then came Bambi. Another dog hit by a car. Another broken little body. Another life hanging in the balance. But this time, there was hope. Bambi could be saved. After so much heartbreak in a single day, we desperately needed something good to come from it. We needed to be able to say yes to this one. So we did. We named him Bambi because with those big, beautiful ears and sweet face, he looks a little like a baby deer. He's a 5-month-old Black Mouth Cur who has somehow remained incredibly sweet despite everything that has happened to him. Now we're asking for your help. We didn't wait until the money was raised to save Bambi. We couldn't. He needed us right then. We made the commitment to give this baby his chance, knowing we would have to find a way to cover the cost afterward. Bambi's first surgery alone cost $1,600, and we are still waiting to receive the bill for his second surgery. On top of those surgical costs are his hospitalization, medications, follow-up veterinary care and the months of therapy and rehabilitation he will need as he heals. For a small rescue, expenses like these are significant. But when a life can be saved, we want to be able to say yes. Ave Maria Lost Her Puppies And Is Now Fighting For Her Life

Ave Maria has already endured more heartbreak than any dog should have to experience. Now, after finally being given a second chance, she has found herself fighting for her life. This sweet 5-year-old mama arrived at a large county shelter in Houston with her newborn puppies, who were only a few days old. Tragically, one by one, all of Ave Maria’s babies passed away in the shelter. Newborn puppies have extremely vulnerable immune systems, leaving them especially susceptible to illness and infection. Sadly, this is a reality many young puppies face in large, overcrowded county shelters, where constant exposure to disease can be devastating for babies whose immune systems have barely had a chance to develop. Ave Maria was left without a single one of her babies. She was sad and withdrawn, barely moving and not even interested in treats. After losing her entire litter, Ave Maria faced yet another devastating blow: she was placed on the shelter’s euthanasia list. Thankfully, Strong Paws Rescue stepped in and saved her. Once she was out of the shelter, Ave Maria began showing everyone the dog hiding beneath all that sadness. She became happier and more energetic, revealing herself to be an incredibly gentle, affectionate girl. After everything she had endured, it finally seemed like the worst was behind her. Then, during what should have been a routine spay surgery, something went terribly wrong. Ave Maria experienced significantly more bleeding than expected. Later that evening, her condition deteriorated. She struggled to stand, her gums became pale, and she was rushed for emergency veterinary care. Her red blood cell levels continued to fall—from 34% to 28%, and then to just 23%. Veterinarians began considering a blood transfusion and emergency surgery to locate the source of the bleeding. There was a very real possibility that immediate intervention would be necessary to save her life. Thankfully, Ave Maria’s body began to fight back. She was able to form a clot, the bleeding appeared to stop, and the blood began to be reabsorbed. Once she was stable enough, she was transferred for continued overnight hospitalization and close monitoring. After losing every one of her newborn babies, surviving the euthanasia list, and now making it through a frightening medical crisis, Ave Maria is still here—and she is still fighting. Her emergency care has also created a significant and unexpected expense for Strong Paws Rescue. Her initial emergency treatment totaled approximately $2,000, with another $1,000 estimated for overnight hospitalization and monitoring. Strong Paws Rescue didn’t hesitate when Ave Maria needed them. Now, they need our help covering the lifesaving veterinary care that gave this deserving mama another chance. Ave Maria has already experienced enough loss for a lifetime. Now it’s her turn to experience safety, love, and the future she fought so hard to have.

Thankfully, that neighbor refused to look away. They got Buster somewhere safe and began desperately reaching out for someone who could help him. That plea eventually reached Sunnyside Street Dogs, and Buster’s life changed forever. Despite everything humans had put him through, Buster remained incredibly sweet and loving. Once he realized he was finally safe, his gentle personality began to shine through. Sunnyside Street Dogs made sure he received the veterinary care, vaccinations, and support he desperately needed while his wounds—and his heart—were given time to heal.
