Abandoned and Injured, Matilda Still Has Hope

Matilda should never have been left to suffer alone. She was found wandering a rural gravel road near Bethany, Missouri, painfully underweight and unable to use one of her front legs. Her ankle is severely swollen, frozen in place, and contracted from what appears to be an old injury that was never treated. Every step she takes is a reminder of the pain she has been forced to endure. A local canine officer safely secured Matilda and cared for her because the small local pound was unable to comfortably accommodate a dog of her size. It also appeared that Matilda had given birth to multiple litters of puppies during her life. After years spent caring for others, she was left alone when she needed help the most. Although a nearby resident believed they knew where she came from, the suspected owners denied that she belonged to them. Her full story may never be known, but it is heartbreakingly clear that she was abandoned. Now safe with Upper Midwest Great Dane Rescue, Matilda is finally receiving the love and compassion she has always deserved. Despite everything she has been through, she has remained incredibly gentle, affectionate, and trusting. She has settled into her foster home beautifully and is soaking up every bit of kindness she's offered. But Matilda's journey to recovery is only beginning. She urgently needs to see a veterinary orthopedic specialist, undergo advanced imaging to determine the extent of the damage, and receive specialized surgery. At this point, her medical team does not yet know if her leg can be repaired or if amputation will be the best option to give her a comfortable, pain free life. Please consider making a donation to help give this sweet girl the second chance she so deserves. 8/1/26 Update As Matilda underwent her veterinary evaluation, her medical team uncovered additional concerns that no one was expecting. In addition to the severe orthopedic issues affecting her front leg, veterinarians discovered an abdominal mass, a possible mammary tumor, and that Matilda is anemic. Right now, her doctors are focused on keeping her comfortable, managing her pain, and closely monitoring her bloodwork in hopes that her anemia will improve enough for surgery. Matilda's front leg has likely never functioned normally, either because of a birth defect or an injury she suffered very early in life. Because Great Danes carry most of their weight on their front limbs, relying almost entirely on one healthy front leg for so long has placed tremendous strain on the rest of her body. That extra stress is now affecting her remaining front leg as well as her spine, making her mobility even more challenging. If her bloodwork improves as hoped, Matilda is expected to undergo exploratory abdominal surgery during the second week of August. This procedure will help her veterinary team determine the cause of the abdominal mass and develop the best treatment plan for her moving forward. Despite everything she's facing, Matilda hasn't lost her gentle spirit. She continues to greet everyone with kindness, soaking up affection and reminding everyone around her just how resilient she is. Her road to recovery has become longer than anyone anticipated, but Upper Midwest Great Dane Rescue is committed to giving her every chance at a comfortable, happy future. Your support is helping provide the specialized care she needs as her team works to uncover answers and give this sweet girl the second chance she deserves. 8/9/26 Update We don’t have a new medical update to share on Matilda just yet, but we did recently get a small glimpse of her life in the care of Upper Midwest Great Dane Rescue. Matilda received some new presents, including a comfortable bed and toys of her own. They may seem like simple things, but for a dog who was found abandoned, severely underweight, struggling to walk, and facing multiple serious medical concerns, having a soft place to rest and a few things to call her own means a little more. Matilda’s last evaluation revealed that her medical situation was far more complicated than originally expected. In addition to the severe orthopedic condition affecting her front leg, her vets discovered an abdominal mass, a possible mammary tumor, and anemia. Her medical team is closely monitoring her bloodwork while working to determine when she will be stable enough to move forward with additional procedures. Her new bed and toys don’t erase the serious challenges she is facing, but they can make the difficult days a little more comfortable. In the meantime, thank you for continuing to stand behind Matilda as she faces whatever comes next. 8/14/26 Update We have some wonderful news to share about Matilda! She is home, and her first surgery went smoothly! One of the biggest concerns was a possible mass that had been discovered during her earlier evaluation. Thankfully, there is now some very reassuring news: no mass was found, and there is no cancer. Instead, it was determined that one of Matilda’s kidneys is slightly enlarged and positioned higher in her abdomen than expected. This will need to be monitored moving forward, but everyone is incredibly relieved that the frightening possibility of cancer has been ruled out. There is more good news, too. Her bloodwork and anemia are improving with regular meals and proper nutrition, and she continues to get stronger as her body recovers. And while Matilda has been recovering, she has made a very special new friend named Six! There may be quite a size difference between the two, but that certainly hasn’t stopped them from becoming best buddies. Six may be tiny, but she has a big personality and has no problem keeping up with Matilda. The two spend their days playing together, sharing toys, curling up in the same bed, and keeping each other company. Six has even figured out that climbing onto the recliner gives her a little height advantage during playtime! Watching their friendship develop has been such a sweet part of Matilda’s recovery, and having a little companion around seems to be making her time at home that much more enjoyable. There are still some decisions to be made about what comes next for Matilda’s leg and a few of her other medical needs, so her journey isn’t over just yet. From Broken Bones to Brighter Days

Just days ago, Stewie was on the euthanasia list at California's overcrowded Devore County Animal Shelter. At only two years old, this tiny pup was facing euthanasia while suffering in silence with a devastating broken leg and hip pain. When Bichon Rescue Brigade learned about Stewie, they knew they couldn't let his story end behind shelter walls. His life had been spared but his battle was only beginning. Veterinarians discovered Stewie had a severely displaced fracture of his left femur. During surgery, they made another heartbreaking discovery: the injury was older than anyone realized. Scar tissue and granulation had already formed around the broken bone, meaning Stewie had likely been living in excruciating pain for much longer than anyone knew. The rescue was given a choice - pay less for a complete leg amputation or pay more to save the leg. To give him the best chance at a pain-free future, BRB opted to save his leg and surgeons performed an extensive orthopedic procedure. They cleaned away damaged tissue, repaired the fracture with a specialized locking bone plate, and performed a femoral head ostectomy (FHO) to restore his mobility. Thanks to his veterinary team, the surgery was a success and Stewie is now on the long road to recovery. For the next two months, Stewie must remain on strict crate rest with no running, jumping, long walks, or rough play while his body heals. He will need ongoing pain medication, follow-up appointments, X-rays, and careful rehabilitation to ensure his leg heals properly. Bichon Rescue Brigade gave Stewie the chance to leave the euthanasia list behind and begin a new life filled with hope instead of pain. Now they need our help to give him every opportunity to fully recover. The rescue fought to save his leg even though that meant a much larger bill. Your donation will go directly toward Stewie's surgeries, ongoing treatment, rehabilitation, and recovery. Eli was saved from the euthanasia list in Palm Beach County on January 23, 2024. Before rescue, he was abandoned when his family moved away, left behind with no one to fight for him. After being pulled to safety, a foster placement fell through, and Eli spent nearly a full year in boarding—watching other dogs leave for loving homes while he continued to wait. Despite everything, he never lost his gentle, hopeful spirit. About a year ago, Eli finally found stability in a committed foster home, where he has truly blossomed. He is housebroken, crate trained, a laid-back couch companion, and a goofy sunbather who simply wants to be near his people. He is the definition of resilient. Now, Eli is facing a life-threatening emergency. He began vomiting suddenly, and veterinary staff suspect a foreign body intestinal obstruction—an extremely dangerous condition that can quickly become fatal without immediate surgery. Eli is scheduled for emergency exploratory surgery. Intestinal blockages can worsen rapidly. Without surgery, toxins build up, tissue can die, and survival chances drop dramatically. Diagnostics and stabilization have already begun, but surgery, hospitalization, medications, and follow-up care will come at a significant cost. Three Stooges Rescue Inc. is currently under heavy financial strain, carrying over $10,000 in credit card debt from previous emergency surgeries, routine vetting, food, supplies, and preventatives for dogs in care. Eli’s emergency comes at a time when absorbing another major medical bill simply isn’t possible without support. Every donation—no matter the size—moves Eli one step closer to recovery. Second chances save lives 3/27/26 Update During Eli’s emergency exploratory surgery, veterinarians discovered a large amount of grass in his stomach and intestines. It appears that Eli may have been trying to make himself vomit, which led to the dangerous blockage. While it’s difficult to determine exactly what triggered the behavior, his foster dad shared that toy time is always supervised, making this an unexpected and frightening situation. The most important thing is that the obstruction was successfully removed, and Eli is now recovering. He’s already starting to feel better, though he’s definitely not a fan of wearing the cone. Like many dogs, he’s a little frustrated with the restrictions, but it’s an important part of keeping his incision safe while he heals. Despite everything he’s been through — abandonment, a year in boarding, and now emergency surgery — Eli continues to show his resilient spirit. He’s resting comfortably, being closely monitored, and taking things one day at a time. Emergency surgery, hospitalization, medications, and follow-up care have created a significant financial burden for Three Stooges Rescue Inc., which was already managing existing veterinary debt. While Eli is doing great physically, his journey isn’t over just yet. We got Tucker two years ago a sweet puppy who soon became a fearless dog who thought he was indestructible. We got him through adoption and he lives at home with 2 older children and mom. He has an older lab to keep him company, as well as cats, turtles, and other animals. He has a pool to swim in here in the Arizona desert. He's primarily inside but plays in the back yard. Very high energy and playful, swims all the time, runs, jumps, and is just a bundle of energy. He's been a good boy and is learning obedience, and starting to get out of the puppy stage ever so slowly! He takes turns withsleeping in the kids beds as well as with mom. Each morning he goes for a swim in the pool. He's the goofiest dog you could imagine. He hides his intelligence beyond his happy go lucky attitude. Always happy, always playful. So playful he's clumsy, which is part of how we came to needing such high vet bills. He is very sweet when he calms down and craves attention 24x7 yet can entertain himself by throwing the ball in the pool and getting it himself! Tucker was at a friends house that has a two story garage with a viewing deck. He was watching him and took the older lab and him up there at sunset, and tucker not knowing what was on the other side of the wall decided to jump over the wall. He fell 23' feet to ground. Snapped his left leg and did major ligament and tendon damage to his right leg. His bills are approaching $12,000. He needs fused surgery to fuse his paw to his lower leg because the original surgery didn't heal properly as the doctor has hoped. We are hoping to offset the costs of the new surgery. My Sage in my life through a rescue called Sweet Paws Rescue. Sage was found buried in a dumpster in Mississippi as a young puppy. Six weeks old at the time. I put an application to Foster when she came to Massachusetts within having her for a few days I found love with her and was a foster failure.. Sage instantly became a part of our family as I already had a dog they bonded perfectly. Sage is beyond sweet. My oldest daughter has severe disabilities and the way Sage interacts with her and the love she provides my daughter Ashley is unmeasurable. The connection they have warms my heart so much. I can’t bear to think of losing her. Sage is a perfect soul of love Sage always makes us laugh as sometimes when our other dogs come over to be petted Sage will take her head and push them away so she can get all the attention. The way Sage looks at me with the love in her eyes always makes me smile. Sage was diagnosed with a nerve sheath tumor of the right trigeminal nerve with tumor extending into the brainstem. My mother adopted her and she loved her so much! She spoiled her rotten. Sadly my mom assed away so I wanted to have a piece of my mom with me still so I adopted Baby Girl! I have had he for a little over a year now and she really such a good girl. She always knows when I am sad and will come over and try to cheer me up! Baby Girl always can tell when someone is coming to the door even before they knock. She loves when my 3 grandkids come over to visit! They love to play with her and give her treats! She loves to follow me in every room that I go in. She is a part of the the family for sure. And I don’t know what I would do without her. Baby Girl loves treats and loves to play with her favorite toy! My grandkids had to make sure that they gave her some toys and some treats for Christmas. She even tried to open the paper because she could smell the treats in there. She made us all laugh the way she was trying to open the paper. She always knows how to cheer me up and I hope that I do the same for her! Sadly on 2-1-2023 Baby and my other dog Oden was playing and somehow Oden grabbed her and her eye had to be surgically removed. I live on a fixed income and really don’t have the money to pay extra bills. But having a dog is so important to me especially her. I was able to put her veterinarian bill. On a credit card but I am worried about how I am going to make the payments. Being on a fixed income is really tough everything in the stores are so expensive, so I barely make it by with the bills that I have already now I had to add another one. My kids are all grown and moved away so my dogs are my babies now. I love them so much!

Pumpkin came to R3 as an outdoor cat colony—just 6 months old, ready to take on her second chance. But not long after, poor Pumpkin began showing signs of pain and swelling around her gums, and it’s progressively worsened. Which, given her young age, was incredibly unusual and required extensive diagnostic testing, X-rays, and treatment to diagnose. The answer? Severe stomatitis—a brutal inflammatory disease where her own body attacks her teeth and gums, and sadly, it will progressively get worse. Already, her tiny mouth is so inflamed and infected that there isn’t a moment where she’s truly comfortable. Despite it all, Pumpkin is a little ball of sunshine with the biggest heart. She’s the kind of cat who greets you at the door, follows you from room to room, and gently pats your arm when she wants attention. She loves chasing her toy mice, watching birds out the window, and snuggling into my lap when she’s tired. Everyone who meets her comments on how gentle and affectionate she is—she’s the perfect little shadow. But Pumpkin’s sudden medical issue has come at a tough time financially. Her vet visits and treatment costs have skyrocketed. Surgery is officially scheduled for January 5th, the cost of which ($2,100) must be covered in full before the procedure date. I’m doing everything I can to get her the care Pumpkin needs, but really need all the support possible. Kaila has been in my life for almost 10 years. We got her on mother's day when we saw her at the shelter and immediately fell in love. She's the sweetest, silliest, and strangest cat I've ever met, and I love her more than words can describe. We've been through so much together; she's my ESA, I grew up with her, and we're currently at college. Unfortunately, Kaila has been having some dental issues. It's always been a problem, but recently it has progressed very fast. She has tooth resorption, advanced gingivitis and dental disease, and recently she lost one of her canine teeth. We've tried to get the money to get her the care she needs, but it doesn't seem like it's possible, and I feel cruel making her wait any longer. She's in pain. She's my soul pet. We have a special bond that cannot be replicated, and it's incredibly difficult to watch her in pain like this. She's usually an extremely active and lively cat, but these past few weeks she's been more lethargic and hiding under blankets (more than usual, she loves to bury but it's different). She's also started clawing at her face after meals and it breaks my heart. I'm currently in college. I receive financial aid, but due to funding it's not enough and I'm unsure if I'll be able to attend. My family has had many sudden medical bills, as well as house repairs. Every time it seems like we're in a better place, something else happens.

Jade was born to my sons dog Feb 17 2020 right before covid hit. she's always been a inside dog sleeps in the bed with me every night. She is the sweetest American Bully you ever meet!! She thinks she is a 10 lb lap dog!! guess beecause she was the runt i bottle feed and spoiled her!!! She goes to Brusnwick county animal hosptal thats her regular vet. Shes neve been sick. about Oct 17th she start wiith a cough ten her nose started running and had sinus infection. i already had vet appointment for her Nov 12th. they put her on antibiotcs a probiotic and something else..i made a follow up for Dec 10th. She was getting better so i mnage to get her in earlier. They kept her all day. My sons are her favorite ppl since they move out. She hears thier name or truck she goes to looking for them..She thinks everyone comes over is here just to see her and you have to pet her before she leasve you alone! Grandkids she loves them so much they comes she goes gets her sqecky toys and goes to town on it taking it to them. she's my lil but and I cant lose her!Im disabled and she helps Me! Im disabled and only get a disability check every month. I done had 3 back and 3 shoulder surgeries.Spent my Christmas money I had saved for the kids and Grandkids gifts at vet this month and last month. They did xrays bloodwork.Bloodwork wasnt to bad have to send xrays off
