Blind Gadget Is Fighting a Serious Brain Condition

ELBURN, IL • Blind Dog Rescue Alliance

At first glance, Gadget is easy to fall in love with. This sweet 6 year old blind Chihuahua has a gentle spirit, a love for cozy blankets, and an incredible ability to find joy despite every obstacle life has placed in his path. Gadget came into rescue from Georgia after his owner made the heartbreaking decision to surrender him, hoping he could receive the care and opportunities she was no longer able to provide. Even before he arrived, we knew he needed help with painful dental disease and seborrhea. But it quickly became clear that those weren't his only medical challenges. Not long after entering rescue, Gadget began experiencing frightening neurological symptoms. He developed a severe head tilt, walked in circles, had rapid involuntary eye movements, vocalized in distress, lifted his legs unusually high when walking, and eventually began knuckling over on his right side. His condition progressed so quickly that his veterinarian immediately referred him to a neurologist. After extensive testing, infectious encephalitis was ruled out. Unfortunately, without advanced diagnostics like an MRI and spinal tap, there is still no definitive answer. Gadget may be living with autoimmune encephalitis, a brain tumor, hydrocephalus, or another neurological condition affecting his brain. While we continue searching for answers, Gadget is receiving medication to manage his symptoms and give him the best possible quality of life. Thankfully, we're beginning to see signs of hope. His head tilt has improved dramatically. He's vocalizing less, turning comfortably in both directions, and has even started walking in a straight line for short stretches. He's eating well, staying curious about the world around him, and happily snuggling into soft blankets with the people who love him. But Gadget's journey is far from over. He still requires ongoing medications, regular bloodwork and urinalysis to safely monitor his treatment, specialist follow-up appointments, and continued neurological care. These expenses add up quickly, especially for a rescue committed to giving medically complex dogs like Gadget every chance they deserve. Despite being blind and facing an uncertain neurological diagnosis, Gadget hasn't given up. His sweet personality continues to shine through, reminding us every day why he's worth fighting for. If you're able, please consider making a donation to help cover Gadget's ongoing medical care. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps ensure this special little boy can continue receiving the treatment, monitoring, and love he needs to keep enjoying the life he fought so hard for.

Bubba

Bubba is a 8 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier in West Gardiner, ME, who needs $1,100 for Fine Needle Aspiration.

West Gardiner, ME

I adopted Bubba six years ago from a shelter; he was hiding in his kennel after being adopted and returned from a difficult past. The first months were hard due to his anxiety, but he learned he’s safe and loved. Now he’s a loyal, friendly therapy dog—and even our rescued feral kitten seeks him for comfort. Please help us give Bubba a chance to heal again. Bubba hasn’t been himself lately. The vet found a fever and a liver mass. Antibiotics seemed to help, but sick-clinic bloodwork hasn’t improved. The doctor recommends an ultrasound-guided needle biopsy to see if the mass is solid or fluid; the estimate is $1,088 for the procedure. He may need surgery costing thousands, which I can’t afford. Bubba has become an amazing member of our family. He goes everywhere with me and stays by my side. Once he knew he was in his forever home, his personality truly shined—he’s loving to everyone, especially family and friends. He also bonds with our other pets, including our guinea pig. Seeing him sick and worrying about losing him is overwhelming for us. I’m on a fixed income and care for my autistic adult son. We’ve struggled financially, and we recently spent $1,100 to diagnose Bubba’s liver mass. We need financial support for further treatment so he can get better. It would mean the world to us to save Bubba.

Doom

Doom is a 10 year old Mix-Breed in Cookeville, TN, who needs $3,000 for Dental Extractions and Digestive Health Testing.

Cookeville, TN

Doom was the runt of the litter and our neighbors were looking for someone to take care of her. It was love at first sight. She’s a neurotic and sassy cat with a ton of energy. We were discussing what to name her one day and we lovingly referred to her as “a little ball of doom” which is how she became known as Doom. I’ve had her for 10ish years now and we love her lots. She’s been having issues with a swollen lip on and off over the years. It was never very serious and would resolve in a few days usually. But in the last year it started to bleed (shes been scratching at it) and it has led to callousing. She also might have digestive issues. She needs $800 for canine extractions and about $2,000 to diagnose and treat her possible digestive issues. She’s very talkative and loves to yell for attention. She’s shy around people she doesn’t know so she hides away in my room until they leave. But if given the opportunity she’ll pop out from behind a curtain and scare the shit out of you lol. Her and our older cat King are besties and love to tussle. We were told her canine teeth had to be extracted and that would be $800. Her digestive issues have gotten increasingly concerning as well. We want Doom to live a long happy life without pain, but we just don’t have any money to do anything and it’s heartbreaking…

Tyson

Tyson is a 7 year old Labrador Retriever in Stratford, CT, who needs $1,000 for Orthopedic Consult, Diagnostics, and Possible Surgery.

Stratford, CT

Tyson is my 7-year-old Labrador Retriever and my best friend. He came into my life at 8 weeks old and is part of everything I do. He’s incredibly loving, loyal, and active dog who adores hiking and swimming. I raised tyson completely on my own- my promise to him has always been to provide a stable home where he is always safe, loved, and advocated for. I would do absolutely anything for him. Tyson developed a cyst on his hind leg and over time, I began noticing increasing stiffness and a consistent limp, especially after his favorite activities. After veterinary evaluation, he was diagnosed with a synovial cyst, which is relatively uncommon and can be complex to properly assess/treat. Thus, he requires an extensive orthopedic work up and possible costly surgery to have it removed. My dog is my heart outside my body. After losing my father and through my hardest days, he’s been my steady comfort and constant supporter. He lives for swimming and hiking, but developing the synovial cyst is causing him more and more discomfort.Without proper testing and possible surgery, it could worsen and damage his joints early. He deserves the same unconditional love he’s always given me. work full time as a veterinary technician in a spay/neuter clinic and support myself. After multiple vet visits, I’ve been referred to an orthopedic specialist for my dog’s rare synovial cyst. The needed testing/care are financially out of reach.
